Chameleon Colors

I heard younger chameleons have to sort of learn different colors. If this is true, could i just put some different colors of paper pieces in the cage or does it need to be actual flowers and such?

Is this a serious question? If so, heres a serious answer. I put different coloured paper in my cages to make mine learn that paticular colour as I like mine to be pure. So, green, red and yellow for the mitsio colour, blue white and red for my Faly and white and red for my Cap est. Females just get a nice subtle peachy coloured paper to practice with. I would try to keep them to just a few colours though. Too many colours make Ambilobe and be sure to do it from young and dont change after a few months or you get a cross. :D:D:D;)

Sorry, the serious answer. They dont learn their colours. It is inherited from their parents and their colours are dependant on the location they originate from with regards to panthers. Other species have their own particular colour pattern, but again, it just develops.

That's really not an unreasonable question, particularly given the pop culture portrayal of chameleons.

that would be so cool if it was real hehe , but maybe somewhere in a non touchable area where pple cant mess up the enviroment , is a unknown chameleon that does that - just day dreaming :p

Everyone (about 6 people) who has seen my Cham has asked - "Why isn't he brown?" "Brown," I say. "Well, he's on your deck."

"Why isn't he black?" . . ."He's on the black railing." And 4 of these people were adults.

So, yes, pop culture, and a lack of proper education about chams in general has led to this popular misconception. Very understandable!

before i got my cham everybody was omg :X chams chams my family, my friends , almost everyone i know was thinking that chams will change their color in split second depending of the enviromental colorthey were so happy about that !i must admit that would be cool !when i told them the real truth :)) they where like .. why do you want a cham ?but now they love it :p

There used to be a commercial (I forget for what) that had a Cham changing colors depending on what it was on. The final shot, the Cham was plad...my favorite color lol

Yeah cleverly made.. but feeds the misconception.

Most every single commercial or movie that features a chameleon changing color portrays is changing to match its background... so that is what everybody thinks.. I can't tell you how many times at reptile shows people ask us to put the panther on the purple tablecloth to see it 'turn purple'

Here is the video I made of a real chameleon color change.

The reason for his color change is seeing a rival male (off camera)

I couldn't agree more, iv had adults ask to to make my chameleon change colour for their kids! Not like I can ask him to change lol. That's a great video you have made its nice to see the colour change sped up

Thanks for the info everyone, and yes it was a serious question :(
I think it was an employee at the pet store I go to said I needed to put flowers in his cage so he could start "learning" different colors. I don't at all rely on them to give me valuable information but I figured I would ask just in case. Right now my cham is only different shades of green, he is starting to get some blue specs along his sides though :D
