We get yearly exams with fecals done every 6 mos unless an issue arises then right off to the vet they go and initially when we first get them they go in for blood work, gram stain and fecal

It is not mandatory, but definitely a good idea. keep in mind chams are in the top ten list of reptiles with parasites, so he will possibly test positive for something. so, don't be alarmed. i think it is a great idea and very responsible of you to put forth the effort and cash of doing so. especially in todays financial times (not being political here, just an everyday observation). If you can afford it, please go. it will put your mind at rest also. currently over any issues or in the near future. you will know already that everything checked out and you are probably over reacting over the food stain on him (example).

I think it's a good idea to have a check up if your chameleon is not upset by handling and it's a good way to check out the vet if you don't have a regular vet that also treats reptiles.
My vet will do a fecal without me having to bring the chameleons in - I also took my Jackson in when he was having a problem - He says he usually doesn't do "well visits" as he says the stress of the visit can do more harm than good - but some vets will not do fecals without seeing the chameleon- especially if they don't know you -and in some states it is required. Most responsible vets will want to make sure your set up is good (mine asked questions when I had my cat in - and was asking about a well visit for them)
Checking for parasites should be done about every 6 months- my vet charges less than 20 bucks - and I just drop it off both came back clean - He would have had me bring them in if they hadn't -
