Effective for what? Frightening him? Probably.

It was just him saying back off, i am having a bad day. Hissing back, while funny, was probably perceived as a threat to him. Just let him be today. He will probably be back to normal tomorrow.

They go thru pissy stages just like people go thru their teens.

I didn't hiss back was just curious if it would do anything. Startled me a ton hahahahaha

Are there just days where they can be pissy? The last few weeks I've been seeing him hiding from me less and then today he didn't dig me at all when I put my hand in his cage to check how many crickets he had left in his cup.

Yes. They have an attitude like a teenage girl. Around 6 months, Echo was really pissy. Now, at a year old, he comes out and hangs out with me almost daily. But I still have to move slowly and carefully. I have been bit, and it HURT! I was surprised by the jaw power he had, and it wasn't even when he was mad. He accidentally got me when I was trying to hand feed. I have had parrots who didnt bite that bad! But, as I said, he was quite pissy today, so he is back in his cage chillin now.
