Can someone take my sick chameleon for free? :'(

Do you have any good friends there? I was thinking maybe you could move him to someone else's place. You could visit him after school, give him meds, clean the cage. And when he gets healthy again you could take him back to your uncle's place?
If you don't have any good friends there maybe you could find a kind member who would help you out?
Just an idea... It breaks my heart when you have to give your pet away, when you truly want to keep them :(

Rescue

If you run out of time or options, call ChamEO. It is a rescue org in southern calif. Elisa will take him and make him well, call (818) 219-9315.

If you find a person with experience who will care for him that is great, but now you can stop worrying. He will be cared for.

Do they have a website

I have allot of friends out here, But no ones going to want me to keep my chameleon at their house. And who knows what they'd do to him. Allot of them smoke & drink so i'm not trying to have Jasper catch a contact high or being handled by a random drunk guy. I'd rather send him off to a member or a rescue foundation.

Uh how did he get sick?

Lol, i wish i knew that answer. Could be many of reasons. 1, feeder insects. 2, the reptile shop i bought him from (most likely answer) 3, could of bought "brand new" foliage that was returned? Theres tons of possibilities.

If you do keep him, be sure to search the forums for using hydrogen peroxide (9-12%) to get rid of the coccidia. Much more effective than boiling water and less noticable!

Having parasites really isnt an issue. Chameleons can have parasites and do just fine without treatment. Parasites usually only become a problem when the chameleon gets really stressed or ill and they get out of hand. I would really explain to them that he isnt sick and cant tranfer them so its not even an issue.

I thought this over long and hard...and i think it would be best if someone else took over Jasper...

Jasper was recently diagnosed with 2 parasites...Pinworms & Coccidia.

I currently live with my aunt & uncle while i'm in college. Talked it over with them about Jasper's treatments earlier and they wer'ent too happy with the fact i'll be boiling water and cleaning parasites in their kitchen...Or taking him outside and cleaning his cage and having a sick "lizard" in my room.

Theres nothing i could really do at this point. I tried my best with providing Jasper with everything i could possibly get. I just don't know what to do...I took him to the vet, got him meds, got him new supplies, etc. Just my aunt & uncle don't want me spreading this stuff with our health or the dogs, turtles, cats, bunny, etc.

This is by far thee hardest thing i've ever had to do...All i'm asking is for someone who knows how to treat his conditions to take care of him. Someone with a kind heart who is willing to make sure he lives a happy life. I don't want someone who has very little experience with chams take Jasper.

Just give me the money via PayPal for overnight shipping and I'll ship Jasper first thing Monday morning...I'm not trying to make a profit, or anything. I just want him to go to a good home where i can watch him grow and see if he over comes his parasites. If no one can take him my only 3 options are letting him go somewhere, giving him to a rescue place, or putting my little dude to sleep :'(

Please PM me if you're interested. Or if you have any questions.

Heres recent pics of my little guy :'( He's full ambanja btw.

Bro you realize releasing him is highly illegal. It's not a good idea unless your in Ambanja, Madagascar, bro

Talked to my aunt and uncle...AND THEY SAID I COULD KEEP HIM! haha man, i feel like a little kid all over again...I'm 21 btw.

Did a bit of research and i figured i could just clean Jaspers cage with 40% peroxide.

So, i'll boil a few jungle vines then throw them in his cage. I'll have to clean his cage atleast 2-3 times a month.

I said F it and hooked Jasper up with brand new everything.

Waiting for my mist king rain nozzles on monday then i'll be set.

But I'm thankful i was able to keep my little guy, i was stressing out because i couldn't think of letting him go to someone else...

Also i want to thank everyone who sent me good thoughts around the way and everyone who was willing to take Jasper in. I really appreciate it and realize how great of a community we have here. It's amazing that i've met quite a few people that are this nice all because our love for chameleons. I'm glad i'll still be part of this community and i'll be sure to update everyone on Jaspers conditions. Hopefully by next month he'll have a great improvement fighting his coccidia/pinworms. I just can't stress it enough how much i appreciate everyone who cared about my chameleon...Really means allot to me! Thanks!

Heres a few pics of Jasper in his new enclosure (Guess he like's his new arcadia lights :) )

To Do's: treat vines w/ 40% peroxide & boil them in water. Boil my river rocks and put them over the soil of the planters pot. Anything else?

You're comment along with a bunch of others really helped me out to keep my little guy. Hopefully i can get ahold of some of the hydrogen peroxide (9-12%). I went ahead and bought a bottle of 16oz 40% peroxide...Used for dying hair? Hopefully it works, if not i'll return it.

I'm so glad you get to keep him! But a bit sad that this means I don't get to foster him! He's very beautiful.

Well done, your aunt and uncle sounded determined, it was no small thing that you managed to sort things out.

I'm really pleased for you and Jasper. I know you can do this, and now your uncle and aunt know that's half the battle. All chameleons have parasites present. It's only when they get to a certain levels that they need to be treated. When we bought our dog he had so many bugs in his gut it took months to sort out. The process of rehousing and stress involved made it worse but at no time could I say he was ill. Look forward to hearing about his progress.:)

Yay!!

I'm so glad you get to keep Jasper!! He is so gorgeous, and it is so obvious how devoted you are to the lil guy :D I'm excited for you:D
I'm sure he'll be spoiled even more now :)

Good luck on getting rid of the parasites!!!

for the absolute record—

he cannot transfer his species of pinworms or coccidia to people, dogs, cats or whatever. there are many species of both parasites, and they live incredibly specific lifestyles and only infect other similar species. I would never consider this a zoonotic disease at all.

additionally, the pinworms will be dead almost immediately after just one dose of Panacur. coccidia can be more of a pain and that's because it's easy to get reinfected by not cleaning properly, but by using the new generation of anti-coccidial dugs (Ponzuracil) it is much easier to treat than ever before.

on top of that, most of the time these infections are sub-clinical, and the affected animal won't even show signs of illness.

clean the cage, get the meds, recheck a few fecals, and you're good to go for years to come.

Sorry I have a problem with not reading the comments while I'm at work ,I'm glad you can keep him . If you still can't pm me ill take care of him good luck

I'm really happy to see that you are going to keep Jasper. Parasites are a common thing with chameleons. About all of my guys have had pinworms at one time or another. They are very easy to get rid of. Luie had cociddia many years ago BEFORE ponzuracil. After you finish all treatments be sure to get another fecal and then about 2 months later get another fecal just to make sure he's still clean.

The 40% peroxide from the beauty supply store it the correct kind to use. I cleaned once a week with it.

haha yeahhh well i'm glad you were willing to take him and you were excited about it. I really appreciate you asking about him though, thanks!

Yup, so glad they said it was ok. Glad i didn't have to part with Jasper.

Dogs are a whole other story haha...But i just learned chameleons naturally have different types of parasites and knowing allot of members who stuck with cleaning out their cages and got rid of the coccidia makes me believe i can do it too. I'll be writing a email to my vet in a few minutes so hopefully he says Jaspers on a good track.

lol well i'm glad it shows! Because i'd damn near do anything to keep Jasper happy. Only time will tell in the long run, hopefully i can get rid of these parasites.

But thanks! I'm excited too :)

Thanks Dr. O! I was waiting for your reply :) Hopefully i can get rid of these parasites. So far jasper has only ate a few crickets this past week. His loss of appetite is what worries me. I did read that pinworms can give chameleons a loss of appetite so hopefully when that passes he'll be a hungry chameleon again. Do you have any suggestions that i could do? He did eat one cricket today, i was shocked because it's been so long since he's eaten. But he drinks water on the daily.

Sorry I have a problem with not reading the comments while I'm at work ,I'm glad you can keep him . If you still can't pm me ill take care of him good luck

All good, glad you were willing to take Jasper. Good to know theres good people out there.

yeah buddy I'm Glad they got the message and you could keep the lil guy :p

haha thanks! I was so glad i got to keep Jasper. Just cost me allot of mula :)

Thanks Jann! Good to know your success stories on getting rid of the 2 parasites. I plan on getting his meds refilled every month and a fecal/exam every month. Hopefully he shows progress on his next vet visit. I'm suppose to email my vet and give him an update on Jasper.
