building a cage

Well my Panther Chameleon is going to be 6 months old and from what I have heard, that is the time to switch him to a larger cage. My husband and I were talking about building one ourselves and making it a project that we could do together. I was just wondering if there is such thing as a cage that is too big? I was thinking about making it 3ft long (side to side)Then making it about 6 to 8 inches higher (top to bottom) and 6 inches wider (front to back)?? I dont know if this is going to be to big. Also I was wondering what kind of screen I need to use. And any ideas that you all have for me to make a excellent habitat for my pride and joy! LOL thanks a lot!

Too big a cage? Nah never that. It depends on the amount of room, and consider future plans for the cham. Do you plan to breed or will it be an only child? Do you have room to spare, and most importantly do you have the plans and materials in mind? I gave my self a week of sketching everything out making final measurements, pricing wood, sealers and inventory on the things I already owned. The screen debate rages in another post, everyone wants plastic coated stuff, I went galvanized steel mesh 1/4 inch. I used it to build my bird cages years ago and lo and behold it came in handy again. Small enough to keep large crickets in, but large enough mesh that the cham can easily climb without losing toe nails! I know a breeder who has his entire basement lined in enclosures, and his only jackson chameleon has a cage as big as my walk in closet. Just factor in everything is my advice..plants, future plans, etc. Good luck, and go through all the posts most of us already put up pics.
