build-it-yourself wood type?

ok, so my boyfriend offered to build me an awesome cham setup for when I move back to California. He's real handy with wood and can produce some neat things. However, I wasn't sure if there are any types of wood he shouldn't get? I figured something that produces sap, like a pine wood, would be a bad idea, but I have no freakin' idea. Also, can he use a finisher on the wood, to protect it from the sprayer? or would that be too dangerous? I am probably over thinking this way too much, aren't I?

Also, we figured we could make the patio into a type of free range, since I want to look into getting Melleri. But since it's an enclosed patio, should we be looking for anything dangerous? Besides nails, of course.

ive built some of my own vivs and never had a problem, you do want to use somthing to treat the wood for the heavy misting it will be taking on as long as you make plenty of air flow you shouldnt have much of a problem there and if your still worried just give it a good scrub down with some reptile disinfectant and as for a patio im from the uk,way to cold for me to have that option so i arnt really sure
