Broken Jaw.

So i noticed about 3 days ago my chameleons mouth was infected. The left side of her mouth was swollen and her teeth were sticking out of her mouth, it was hanging by a thred so i had no choice but to pull it out. Then the other side of her mouth (bottem right side) the teeth were also sticking out. Finally got the vet to come to my house and this is what happened....the vet came today, turns out she broke her jaw. He said it must have happened a couple of weeks ago but it didnt start showing until a couple days ago. He said with chameleons they do whatever they can to make themselves seem alright even though they might be dying. :( He had to do surgery while he was here and remove her entire jaw and teeth. He froze her mouth and cut the teeth out. He said there is less than a 50% chance she will make it. I have to crush up worms and strain them and mix them with supplements, tofu and pinapple juice and feed it to her a few times a day with an oral syringe. I also have to clean her mouth with betadine four times a day. I have to give her a bath 4 times a day in an electrolyte solution and also give her medicine once a day. The problem with it is now that she has no jaw or bones below so she will have to work on her muscles so what i am hoping for is that she will be able to hopefulyl soon close her mouth. she looks like a fish at the moment. If her mouth muscles arent strong enough to close her mouth or if she looses movement in her mouth then she will need to be put down because it will cause very serious problems like dehydration, mouthrot, etc. Its going to be alot of work, but i really hope she makes it!! I believe she is strong and even with the odd's against her she will make it. The problem is he is the ONLY vet in town who has expeirence with Cham's. I would really appricate a second opinion, and i cant find a similar scenario on the internet. Has this happened to your chameleon? and if so, what did you do to help her?

wow.... never heard that before... never heard of giving pineapple juice either? There are other recipe's for "bug juice" if you search it in teh search engine here

Chameleon's jaws will become misaligned from Metabolic bone disease. Does your chameleon have that? Do you have any idea how her jaw became broken? I have never heard or seen a broken jaw from a fall, atleast not since I have been a member on here everyday for the past 2 plus years. Please post some pics of her even though they might be upsetting to some of us. Fill out the form also. When you said the left side was swollen and you had "no choice but pull it out" what did you mean?. How old is she and how long in your care? Again please fillout the form.

That is just awful ! I really feel for you both and the horrible experience you are going through. I will be thinking of you both and crossing my fingers for your little one to make it through.

I believe that infection can lead to (jaw) bone loss. It happened to a WC Parson'sfemale that I had once and during the surgery to clean out the infection a whole section of the jaw bone fell out. Hope you can get yours to eat okay without it. Mine simply chewed on the other side.

Hi guys, i dont have a camera right now. No she does not have bone diease, she is clusty and falls all the time. The vet examined her for about an hour and that was the conclusion (broken bottem jaw) What i mean by "had no choice but to pull it out" her left side (row of teeth) were coming out of her mouth and it was hurting her, it was hanging by a thread so i pulled the left row of teeth out. She is doing a bit better now but the only thing i really need to figure out as of this point is how to help her be able to close her mouth. Because she has absoluty nojaw bone or teeth at the bottem of her mouth anymore it is sagging. So she needs to get her bottem mouth muscles strong enough to eventually close her mouth again. . I know with people who hurt themselves they go to theraphy to work their arm muscles, leg muscles, etc.. depending on what they hurt. I am just trying to figure out if there is something i should be doing to help her get her bottem mouth muscles stroung. Becuase if she cant close her mouth seriouse things could happen(the vet says) that she can get mouthrot, extreamly dehydrated, etc from not being able to close her mouth. So if anyone has ANY suggestions what so ever shoot them at me!

She is a female three horned chameleon, about 2 and a half years old. Apparently captured from the wild. I got her a year ago. She has a screened in terrarium with plants made for chameleons (artificial, from the pet store)

Thanks for asking! She is doing a bit better now, the vet came by again today and said that i will have to syringe feed her for the rest of her life, which im fine with, he said hopefully within the next six weeks she can work her bottem mouth mucles and close her mouth! He still says there is less than a 50% chance she will make it, but i think she wil!!
