Breeding Silkworms

Hey i will be breeding silkworms and would like to know if anyone has anything i should know and advice. Also post pictures of your setups. Thanks

Hey there.

Not too sure about breeding them in large amounts. When I was little we used to keep them as pets/hobby. It was not very hard. The toughest part will be finding your starter worms. Thereafter it is pretty simple. The eat mulberry leaves, lettuce, beetroot leaves...(these make the worms spin a red cocoon :D)
Once the worms are adults they will spin a cocoon and change into pupae and then moths. So if you want to keep your cycle going you need enough to breed as well as to use as feeders. The moths will come out, mate and then lay eggs. They don't eat and their lifespan is short. The eggs usually hatch when the temperature in the weather increases. We never incubated them or anything like that. The babies are tiny when they hatch and there will be many. The trick is to keep your boxes clean on your feeders so that they will be healthy for your cham.

Actually thinking about getting some myself soon too. ;)

was my explanation not adequate?
ok start with a 30 or more gallon rubbermaid containter (from target walmart etc.)
instead of buying the cup you normally buy buy the 100 small silkworms, by themselves.
then buy the bag of chow for them.
you should keep at least 20 for breeding.
when the catterpillars get big and fat like their about to pupate put egg cartons on the floor and glued to the wall.
keep them at atleast 80 degrees.
when the moths hatch your job is done, they will do the rest of the work, and lay their eggs, incubate the eggs like i said (your garage is fine) and they should hatch out mini silkies, just make sure you have ALOT of food.

They do it is really pretty. We used to spend hours steaming and "unwinding" the cocoons after the moths came out. Only to be clueless as to what to do with them after that

no no i loved what you had told me last night but i was just wondering if anyone has any other options but your sounds the best and i didn't know they eat those leaves and lettuce. Thanks for the info, both of u get more reputation points from me:D:D:D:D:D

ne way, i just got a bunch of zebras from mulberry farms, and so far 24hrs they are eating and chillin, im gonna wait like 3-4 days to feed them off since they are small sized and i have xtra waxies and supers to hold em off for a couple days. i plan on breeding a few, bec i dont expect to go through 300 in a month. if i do, i will be surprised.
