Basking

How hot should the basking be for a 3.5 month old panther?

Also, will he know not to get too close to the heat bulb? - like climbing on the mesh under it for example.

Around 85 degrees or so. No, they will climb on the screen upside down under the light when they are young. They figure it out sooner or later that it is HOT but sometimes they might get burned during the learning process.

the kammers care sheet actually suggests 90-95 for youngsters, not saying you should aim for that high but .. its not completely out of the question. seems like most people prefer to keep it around 85. i find my cham is more active around 90 though (never really gone over 90). if notice he is gaping a lot then it is too hot probably..

I'd shoot for low 80s at your "basking site" (which is the branch/vine closest to the basking bulb) for a youngster. He likely will climb on the screen a good bit, which is part of why I'd say low 80s at the branch. Because right under the screen will be several degrees warmer.

Ideally the basking light should be at a angle with the light directed at a branch/vine that is a few inches (I'd say 6-10) below the uvb, this way while they are basking they're getting uvb.

I'm told they would typically bask in the morning and evening , so the "lateral basking" resulting from having the basking light at a angle is also more natural.
