Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Baby Veiled Cham, female - "Okim". Got her exactly 1 wk ago.
Handling - every other day for a few minutes.
Feeding - Crickets (tiny- following the 'space between the eyes' rule). She eats 4-6/day. Feed 2x/day. Cricket powder. Gut Loading: Sweet potatos, leafy greens, Carrots, green squash, peaches.
Supplements - Dust w/ calcium daily & plan to add D3 & Vitamins 2x/wk (until older? then less often... is this right?)
Watering - Mist the cage/plants 2x/day. See her drink & eat often.
Fecal Description - brown w/ white.
History - got her from a local pet store. The cage there was overcrowded with babies. The store owners were not very knowledgable about Cham. care, so no idea how healthy she is.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Medium size starter cage, glass w/ screen top & small screen in front.
Lighting - ZooMed UVB, (the U shaped tube). Lights are on 9-9pm.
Temperature - 72-82F. Lowest overnight temp: 65F How do you measure these temps? ZooMed thermometer.
Humidity - 50-70% depending on when I mist. What do you use to measure humidity? ZooMed Humidity Reader. -- Somedays, when I mist it goes up to 100%, not sure if that's a problem. It's VERY humid in this city... I am careful to let the cage dry out before misting again. Thinking of adding ice cubes or a drip cup to the top of the cage.
Plants - plastic for now. Plenty of natural climbing branches.
Placement - Low traffic. On an eye level shelf. cage top at 5.5ft.
Location - Hong Kong

Current Problem -

Tiny pimple like bumps that fade & flatten into her skin. When flat, they are skin colored. When popping out, they turn rough/hard & a milky white color. I tried to get a good shot so you can see what it looks like. Most of them are on her sides, but there are one or two on her head as well?? Anyone know what this is??

We really hope we didn't buy a sick animal, please let us know if this is normal or a concern. And how should we help her... Also, if our care info needs to improve, we're happy to take advice on that too! Wanting to get it right so we can keep a happy & healthy Cham.

Also concerned about her wanting to climb to the cieling screen to be near the UVB light? Maybe she needs a warmer basking temp? Is it ok for her to be upside down & very close to that UVB bulb? I have tried to keep her down so far. ???

Thanks. -MJ

Your temps are fine and the uv shouldn't give off a lot of heat. Sometimes they just like to be upside down :)

If it was me I would go to the vet. Bumps aren't good, it could be subcutaneous parasites or some sort of cyst. I'm no expert but a vet could tell you for sure.

Are you planning to add more insect variety to her diet in the future?

thats very interesting, Hope someone can help you out Ive never seen anything like that.Your best bet is take him to a vet.

Are the bumps hard, or soft?
Bumps like that under the skin are not a good sign.
You need to take him to a vet ASAP (IMO)

I have seen parasites under the skin before on here but you can actually see the outline of them. Not sure if they can cause bumps like that but I think it is worthy of vet visit especially if they start to multiply.

The bumps are hard, but they disappear/flatten when she's relaxed/sleeping. I notice them when she's hunting/eating or when I pick her up or spray her... Makes me wonder if it's mood related? But it almost looks like a skin issue, on top of the skin... very odd how they flatten though. You can still see where they are up close, but they will blend in, become clear when they flatten???

we have not found any other insects to be available here... Not sure if we will add any others.

Thanks everyone. Looking for reptile vets now, hope to get one on the phone tomorrow... What a frustrating start, if it's parasites, I bet every one of those lil' guys at that pet store are sick... :(

So no one has seen these kind of bumps? Weird!!

try to find one who is experiences with chameleons, if you tell us your general vicinity I am sure members on here can point you to a reputable chameleon vet. We can also help with your feeder issue.

Thanks. As I mentioned in the original post, we live in Hong Kong. :)

Sent pics in an email to the vet. It will be a stressful trip to get Okim to the vet (1hr+ one way, on public transit in 90*F or more)... so we thought we'd see what he thinks & only take her in if needed.

I have heard there is a concern with Chams hurting their eyes by staring at or being too close to the UVB bulbs?? - But at some of the pet stores here (not where we got her) they have the bulbs right inside the cages.

So is staring at the light not a problem then? Even if the bulb is on the screen, it shouldn't be a problem for her to hang out up there? (The heat bulb is 8inches above).

Thanks. -MJ

Welcome to the forums. Okim is absolutely adorable! My male veiled gets something like this sometimes but they are just like pimples. My vet would squeeze a little white stuff out. I would recommend an all screen cage for more ventilation and plenty of outside time in the shade of course. Natural UV works wonders for these guys. Let us know what the vet says about the pictures you sent.

Did your vet ever say how to prevent the pimples or what caused them??

On the cage, we'll definitely go with the all screen when we get a bigger cage as she grows... Started with a smaller one because she's so young. :)

No my vet never said and it looked different from your girls. I would try to get her in and all screen cage now and give her plenty of outside time. You can't put her outside in glass. It would be like being in a car in the heat with all the windows up. If this is a bacterial or fungal infection it could be caused by high humidity with poor ventilation.

I realize putting her outside w/ the glass wouldn't work... Of course, outside on the 51st floor balcony isn't my first choice either. Also not sure about how the HK pollution will affect her... Still working out the logistics there.

So what is too high on humidity??? I've looked for the right range, but only found temp ranges. Thanks.

I suggest you make a new thread to get information true to your question. There are many reputable people on here that may know.

Could be a number of things...viral or bacterial or even fungus. You need a vet to be sure.
Do they just disappear or do they leave a sort of scab or discoloured area?

I’m not sure how old my female is. Her bumps go away totally when she is resting. I only see them when misting.
