Current problem- I have been having the issue with the dry eyes in two of these babies. Well today the runt passed away and now I'm freaking out. I still have another one with the problem. I can't get into the vet until Monday. The one who died had the dry eyes and when misted she was fine. Then out of no where she became completely disoriented and couldn't barely hold herself up and gasping for air then died. It happened like immediately I was watching it was terrible. The gasping had me thinking respiratory infection but everything else has seemed eye related. No gasping until right before she died. I ended up putting a humidifier on the cage earlier in the week but it was getting humidity too high so now I just have it on in the room. The top of the cage is now staying 50% and the bottom 80%. 74 degrees ambient 88 in basking. The eyes just appeared dry before and now I think there may be a little crust I tried wiping it with a qtip and warm water. At night when they are asleep it appeared a little black around the eyelid. Please help -_-.. The earliest I can get then to the vet is Monday. Even then I'm not sure what they can do medicine wise for these little guys

Thanks Laurie im head there in 2 hours.. not that I'm complaining but the other sick one seems way better today. Go figure before I take him in he acts normal. 2 days ago I was convinced he wasnt going to make it through the night. He turned dark and got disoriented like the other one and wouldn't move. Its my first time going to this vet I hope he's good.

Any vet info so the test of us have in in our heads

Does the humidifier blow hot air?
You aren't spraying water in the mouth of the chameleon are you?
There can be a natural die off when you buy chameleons that young.

To answer your questions. Yes it is a warm mist humidifier. No I have not sprayed water in they're mouths, out of curiosity why do you ask though because the vet actually recommended possibly trying to syringe feed them which I thought was pretty ludicrous. Also I understand there is a natural die of but I just don't want to see it lol.. I hatched them and it makes me feel like I've done something wrong.

But on to what the vet said. He attributes a lot to the fact that they hatched prematurely at 5.5 months and did not take in all the nutrients they would have if they hatched at 6-7 months. They have been eating and drinking but are still undersized and dehydrated. He said because of they're size they metabolize a lot faster and the water goes through them and recommended I drop the basking temp from 88 to 84. He doesn't believe it's an eye infection but they definitely have some sort of irritation he gave me a pluronic ointment to put on the eye. Because of the gasping in the one chameleon and the potential for an eye infection he also has me administering a mixture of .25 ml of baytril and 5.75 ml of saline through a nebulizer for 15 minutes twice a day.
