Antibiotics

So I went to the vet yesterday and they gave me antibiotics for a RI. It wasn't baytril and asked why they said it can be very rough for a younger chameleon (6 months) and gave me smz tmp. I just want to know if anyone has ever used this and if its okay?

For an RI a vet would need to do a culture and sensitive test to see what kind of infection your Cham has and which drug would work on that type of infection. I am not familiar with the drug you mentioned above.

This is how I felt but they said they didn't want to use baytril yet because it is a strong antibiotic. They looked at him say the bubbles near the mouth and some crust near his eye and thats why they said the smz tmp. They said if it progresses any further that we would go to baytril

It's Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim (I used google cause I don't know active agents just from product name ;)). Both may work, but as Jann said hopefully a resistance test was done to assure this. I would not use this medication in patients with kidney issues (which your chameleon shouldn't have at this age) and only with proper fluid infusion.

Enrofloxacin (Baytril) is no choice for a young chameleon, cause it can disturb cartilage growth and there are a lot of other antibiotics which can be used safely instead. I've made good experiences with inhalation in respiratory infects additionally, too.

This is exactly what they said that it would cause problems with cartilage. I know that they did dilute it and had to go over it a few times to make sure it was right. I used Google as well I just couldn't find anyone using it for chameleons so I figured this was the place to ask!

I've used sulfa-trimester quite a few times on my chameleons and it worked well...but it was never for an RI.
