Alternative Gutload

ISA my Veiled

New Member
hey guys,What would be a good temporary gut load, all I really have for "Vegetation" are plums and nectarines...I don't have all that much money and would prefer not to run out and grab something until next week...What do you guys think? any other suggestions. NOt sure of what I have in my pantry that could be used as gut load but I really don't want to starve my crickets because obviously would not have a very good nutritional value for all of my guys here. I am feeding my Veiled but also 4 Leopard geckos...Hope that helps! Thank you!

Not sure if i should pick out the dandelions in my lawn, idk if my father uses weed killer, I haven't been home in months lol. But oatmeal, just make sure its sugar free right?

I also have corn flakes that have a used by of 4/11/12 and rice crispies that are plain and haven't expired. Couldn't find oatmeal but I am still looking.

Yes that's fine! You can even use some cereal with small amounts of sugar when you're stuck, just not all the time.

EDIT: I wrote that's fine before I saw about cornflakes etc. corn isn't that great, try find something with wheat or bran.

I don't want to use the dandelions from around either BUT I'm going to grab the seeds off of one and plant some inside the house. It grows and grows so could be a good thing to have about for times like this :)

Yeah very good point on that one. I also do have QUAKER Instant Oatmeal: Weight Control. It has 1gram of sugars. My only thing is that it is flavored Maple&brown sugar...

cranberry juice...lmao No though none of that....hmm. Keep throwing ideas out there. I just don't know what stuff they can have. What about honey nut cheerios? lol

I've seen Cheerios mentioned before, not sure about honey but, have a look at which nuts and the sugar content on that one.

Any baby rice or baby cereal?

Well if you have some veggie wash/cleaner you could pick the dandelion leaves and wash them off with it. Grass? LMAO, I'm not sure what to do here :/ I use plain oats that... well, are just plain oats.

Okay, I will check the sugar content on the Cheerios. Idk which nuts would be in it. I don't have any baby rice or Baby cereal. Like i said just rice crispies. Hmm..lol

LOL well get your priorities straight! :p and no I would have used those already, are you guys sure the plums and Nectarines are not good if I cut out the pieces away from the pit.

I've heard that all yellow fruits are safe, so my guess would be that nectarines may be good? I don't know but I do know that bananas and peaches are definitely safe, I wouldn't go with plums.

Sandrachameleon has a blog that contains a huge list of different foods that can be used to gutload and the nutritional information for each. You might scroll through the list and see if there are any food items on the list that you have available in your home.

I've mixed up one of her dry gutload recipes, it only cost me 6 bucks and lasted months now. When you get a chance pre-mixing gutload is a great idea!! Not to mention the crickets go crazy for it... After eating sandrachameleons recipe they can jump wayyy to high! Lol

Edit: whoops people beat me to posting!

please go easy on the oatmeal and corn flakes - these are NOT good choices for gutloading in any significant way (small amounts now and then are fine)

the fruit is fine, yes removed from the pit, especially if only using it for this week and next week something else.

this blog entry has a list of things that you might use for gutloading: https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/sandrachameleon/75-feeder-nutrition-gutloading.html

Yeah I wasn't really planning on using oatmeal unless it was plain and the cornflakes are expired lol. I was just curious as to what would be effective for a short period of time for like the week.
