All Day Event!

Girl, my female veiled, has been digging nonstop since 9 o'clock this morning!
She has an awesome hole already dug, but she contiues to keep digging.
The only thing sticking out of the hole about 1 inche of her tail.
She started digging two days ago, so this is the thrid day.
She would dig a couple time each day for the first two days, and has now been digging nonstop all day.
I do have a quick question though.
Since she has large and deep hole already dug and the lights turn off in a hour in a half, then should I leave the lights on?

I left the lights on when she was digging into the night. I dug up her first clutch at 3AM-it took her a long time to cover up the hole and climb back into the top of her cage! I watered her and turned the lights off an hour later.

She is sound asleep in her hole.
It's one hell of a hole too!
She is so far in I had to use a flashlight to see her.
It in a 'L" shape about 6" straight down at a 45 degree angle, then it goes to the right a couple of inches.
All I can see is her tail curled up.
For some reason I screwed up the timer and it turned the lights out.
I adjusted the timer so the lights will turn on around 6:30.
That should give her a good head start in the morning.

Here is a picture of what she has dug.

How exciting. 3 days to dig her hole. Is that usual? Good luck to you and your little mother to be. It is a long time to wait for such little creatures.

Justin,

I believe in the future you could shorten her excavation time by offering less sand.
They will dig to the bottom (or as far as they can) regardless of whether that is 5" or 20".
Good luck ... I assume this is the translucent female?

Has she finished covering yet? When my female laid, i opted to turn off the lights too and she fell asleep in the hole After she bearly covered up the eggs. After she woke up, she wasted no time covering them and smoothing the top of the sand.

Brad is right.

I used those big plastic buckets you can almost see through. The female would dig until she hit bottom, normally next to a side. Lay, get out and close. Sometimes two chambers. You could see the eggs through the plastic side where they leave them. I used a 8 inch of a damp sand/soil mix, it worked to hold the tunnel to the bottom/side.
Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the help!
She finished laying a couple hours ago.
53 perfect eggs!
Yea, the male is a low-end translucent.
You can see it it the picture.

Hooray and Congrats! Big clutch! Now the wait! I am at nearly 8 months with my Veiled eggs and they seem happy and content to just keep incubating! :)

Looks good justin! Are those the deli cups from lll? I'd plug a few of those holes on the cups to allow the hatch rite moisture to stay retained! Is this your first clutch?

Good call Nico!
Yea, I bought the hovobator kit from LLL.
The one with the deli cups and HatchRite.
I've been playing with the temperatures and it does seem like the HatchRite dosen retain it's moisture very well.
Are you having a problem with it?
How did you plug you holes?
Right now I'm incubating at around 80 degrees, so hopefully I wont have an 8 month incubation like Juli.

Yeah i bought the hovabator kit like you did. I ended up just tossing those deli cups and i went to dollar tree that can hold 16 eggs in each container and you can put 4 next to each other and it fits flawlessly in the hovabator, plus you can stack them, totaling up to 8. The hatchrite looses moisture if you have bigger holes. If you use those deli cups, if i were you i'd plug all but one of the holes and cover that one hole half way, use scotch tape to cover it up. My roomate took 4 of my 55 eggs and did that in one of those lll deli cups and put them in his closet and they look great so far. Whats funny is that i havnt even turned my hova bator on for the eggs yet. My closet stays almost exactly at 77 degrees. Congrats on the clutch, the eggs look great.

Also, i forgot to add, your hova bator, i would just toss that metal screen and dont put water in the bottom like it says to, from the looks of it in your pics, your gonna drown your eggs!

Thanks for the help Nico!
I didnt think of using tape.
I was actually considering silicone...
No, their isn't anywater in the bottom.

Those are some big eggs, huh?
