Aggressive veiled chameleon

Hi all, I have a male 5 month old male veiled that at times can be aggressive which i find is normal but at times when I reach in to feed him he will hiss and open his mouth and he will nail me with his tongue LOL. I spoke with a few chameleon keepers locally and they all tell me they have never seen this before. Has anyone here seen this behavior?

Thanks,

John

Hello and welcome to the world's best chameleon forum :)

It's true, veiled can get very territorial and defensive, esp between 6 and 12
months of age.
It's best to leave him alone as much as possible.
When feeding, use a feeder cup, or simply turn the cricks loose in his cage
so he can hunt them down.
It's not unusual for them to zap a hand in their cage thinking there is food,
or not knowing that your fingers are not really giant worms

Try not to get your hands near him while he is in a grumpy mood, just ignore
him.

Can you please post a pic of him and your cage set-up?

You should have a cage at least 18 x 36'', and elevated off the floor, like on
a table or stand, so he is looking down on you. This makes them feel more secure.
Also, you need to have plenty of foliage, branches, vines etc. for him to hide.
They become very stressed and defensive if they feel exposed.

We have all kinds of care sheets, just scroll down and see the box on the left
that says; 'chameleon care' and click on the subject you need.

Pics!! we wanna see pics of your guy (and cage too) :)

He is in a 24X18X48 screen cage I built and it's sitting as high as it can with his basking light only being about 8" from 8 foot ceiling. He has tones of plants to hide in alone with perches. He eats like no tomorrow and I have a dripper setup and also a few times a day he will come to the screen when I spray his cage and drink from the spray bottle.

No pics on the links! Anyway, my Veiled Omar was the sweetest little guy who would crawl on my hands and eat while sitting on my lap; until he turned about 6 months old. Now he would bite my face off if he could:D! He hisses and lunges when I put my hands near him. Occasionally I can catch him when he is on the lower branches of his cage and manuever him onto my hand. He still hates it and grips my hands so tightly he will break the skin. I know it is because he is just scared so I give him a quick kiss and put him back in his cage! He hates the kiss part too but I make it quick and from the side but he still probably thinks this giant thing might be taking a bite of him!

I saw my pics earlier but now I don't see them either and the links don't work either. I have to figure the image thing out. I had other veileds but never got nailed with the tounge. Well thanks to everyone for all the replies.

Hi and welcome to the forums :)

As mentioned, veileds especially can be aggressive when they're young and growing. Some never outgrow it, some do. When I got my veiled at 10 months he was the sweetest veiled I'd ever seen, but some other 10 month olds I had seen had been vicious. Just stay with it and don't taunt him, it's perfectly normal :)
