a few newbie questions

Hi everyone! I'm having some issues keeping my crickets alive. I tried searching the forums but I can't find what I'm looking for so hopefully you guys can clear up a few questions I have.

I currently keep my crickets in the garage. They live in a rubbermaid container with holes drilled in the side and screen hot glued over the holes so they cannot escape. They're small enough that I can keep the lid off. It seems that every batch I get from petco/petsmart of 50 I end up with half of them dead. I give them fresh water cubes every ~2 days and cricket crack is their dry food. This leads me to my questions:

1) I've read that they need some circulation which is currently lacking in my garage. Would putting a fan (not directly, but a few feet away from the container) on them provide them with the proper circulation? Is it a problem if the fan does not oscillate?

2) How long does the cricket crack stay 'fresh' enough for them? Should I be changing it out? And if so how often?

3) My ex-roomate left a bunch of oranges in the fridge....they're probably not so great for human consumption - do you think they'd be ok for cricket consumption?

Thanks for your time everyone, I appreciate it!

Do you have anything like broken up egg cartons (that have not been used for eggs) or such in there for them to hide in?

How hot is it in your garage? Humid?

I've got ~4 small pieces of eggcrate I got when purchasing my crickets. I also have 2 empty toilet paper rolls. Eggcrate used by eggs is bad? What's the reasoning behind it?

it hasn't gotten too hot here yet so I'd say it's low to mid 80s. No humidity. I'm thinking it's air movement but I just wasn't sure if constant airflow is bad.

I can answer on the oranges and yes you can use them. They love them!!!
Even if they're really old? haha

as long as they arent rotten and moldy they should be fine...the fan might not be a bad idea...what size crix are they? they only have a lifespan of 7 weeks or so

cardboard eggcrate is fine but the styrofoam kind they will eat!!! So maybe whoever said the eggcrate was bad was referring to the styrofoam. Eidt: I see what you referring to to about what Kinyonga said. I am not sure as I have used egg cartons that contained eggs also!???? Maybe she meant if the eggs had possibly leaked into the cartons sometimes when they break.

they're small crickets, and they only last me a few days before a good majority of them are dead =/ I'll set the fan up tonight and see if I can get em to live longer.
