Chameleon Info:
  • Your Chameleon - Male Ambilobe panther chameleon, 4 yrs old, we've had him 3.5 years.
  • Handling - Once a week we tend to take him out and he crawls around on our hands.
  • Feeding - Almost exclusively dubia roaches dusted. Also banded crickets on occasion.
  • Supplements - Roaches eat mostly apples and Ghann's cricket chow - dusted with Zoo Med repti-calcium (no D3) They're dusted and put in a roach feeder in the cage, changed out once a week.
  • Watering - 3 nozzle misters in cage, 20 seconds 5 times a day plus 3 minutes twice a week.
  • Fecal Description - His last poop was very runny and kind of stinky, this was the first time I've seen that. Otherwise pretty normal looking at the poop article here. Orangish urates.
  • History - He got a full work up at the vet in Jan 2016, diagnosed with conjunctivitis, yeast in stool, and something unbalanced in his bloodwork which I can't recall, given fortaz intramuscularly for 21 days, and gentacin eye drops twice a day. He checked out okay on his follow up. More recently he's slowly developed a white lump on his side over the past 6 months or so. New vet analysis showed it was an inflammatory reaction and not cancerous - they gave Flurbiprofen Opthalmic drops to be applied twice a day for a week. This was a month or so ago and no noticeable effect.

Cage Info:
  • Cage Type - Screen cage 24x24x48
  • Lighting - 70w Exo Terra Sunray Metal Halide, 3x Jungle Dawn LED bulbs, 11,20,20w, 2x 60w incandescents simulating sunrise/set. 11 hrs/day of cage light plus ambient from adjacent window.
  • Temperature - 69-85 degrees range, 65 overnight
  • Humidity - ~65rh There is a full time humidifier fogging into the cage from one side, plus whatever the misters provide at their roughly 20 seconds each 2 hour intervals.
  • Plants - Philodendron lemon lime vine and fake plants.
  • Placement - Corner of otherwise unused room adjacent to window. Sees very little traffic during the day. There is a floor vent 2' under cage but does not blow directly at cage. Top of cage is 6'3"
  • Location - Chicago, IL

Current Problem - He's been caught 'sleeping', or at least curled up in a sleeping position, very often recently. He keeps both eyes closed often, but can open them if he wants. IE when he's being handled and actively crawling around. We don't actively feed him save for on weekends occasionally, but we monitor his fat pads which are usually plump. Over the last couple days I noticed them caving in a bit which tells me he's not eating like before. Closest non-emergency vet appointment is Friday, so any help is appreciated!

He also has the white lump on his side which the Opthalmic drops did not seem to affect. Vet says it's inflammatory. The black spot seems to be from one day when a drop of blood came out of it, maybe from being scraped on something in the cage - this was during the drop treatment. Looking for other treatment suggestions besides surgery.

Photos are from today, except cage photo which is older but still current save for the bonsai, which tragically passed away.

His eye definitely seems very weird. He should have some more foliage to provide a place for him to hide from you. Does the vet know about his eyes being closed?

Good tip, thanks - if you're looking at the 4th pic, I think he was in the middle of one of his eye-squidge movements when I shot the photo and his pupil hadn't quite centered yet. Vet asked no questions when I made the appointment.

The 5th pic also looks weird, I'd definitely make sure the vet takes a look at that.

The white mark I would have said was a papilloma but you said the vet said it's not cancer...so I didn't comment because I don't know what else it can be. I'm no good at finding solutions for eye issues because there are so many things that can be the problem and a lot of which need testing for so I can only say see a vet for that too. Sorry...but I don't know what else to tell you.
