This may seem counter intuitive, but I think longer mist times will give the cham time to get over the initial shock of the mister turning on and figure out that it's not such a freaky event and actually enjoy a nice long drink and soak. Another suggestion would be to either buy or make your own...
i was curious about the UV output of these bulbs and was surprised when I measured them with a solarmeter... not much more UV output than a linear tube. They do seem to last a bit longer as well... I have a few that are still in the correct range after a year. The only concern would be the heat...
Your choice of bulb is fine. I have used this type of mercury vapour bulb for years without any problems. If you have live plants in your cages they would benefit from the addition of a grow light tube. Cheers!
I made my own "rain domes" They work great! I used the cheap plastic pots some of my house plants came in. I just mounted the nozzles in the tops and aimed them down towards the screen. It is actually the screen that catches the water and forms the droplets that then rain down into the cages...
Sorry to hear about the loss of your cham. I have had a not too great experience with a cham "expert" vet here in Calgary as well. If you like, I would be very interested in talking with you. Maybe send me a PM and we can exchange info.
I've been in your shoes before... No fun. I lived in a small town in southern Alberta... not too many options. I was lucky and found a few sources for fruit flies though. Is there a large college or university near you? Alot of times they will have a biology dept that may give you a starter...
I tend to agree with seeco... I'd like to add that to most people's eye a chubby cham is a healthy cham.... leading to large clutches and egg bound females. Sadly, I believe this is the fate of ALOT of female "pet" chams.
The photos are of the way I installed my nozzles on my older Repti-Breezes... with holes. On my newest one I made a "rain dome" that just sits on the top of the cage. Try a search for rain dome. Very easy to make.
Around here there isn't really a "good" store to go to... they all seem to have problems with chams. I think the problem stems from the fact that chams have such specialized care requirements unlike most other "pet" reptiles. What has "worked" for the store in the past just doesn't apply to...
I have Mistking nozzles installed in all my Repti-Breeze cages except my new one... I didn't want to put a hole in it... LOL I made a "rain dome" to go on that one. Anyway, here are a couple photos of my install. Cheers!
