I noticed a few days ago that my ambilobes neck started getting a little swollen. I touched it and it just feels like his skin...what could it be? It looks a little more swollen then its picured.

Cage Type -screen cage 2x2x4
Lighting - reptisun 5.0 and a zoomed 75 watt basking bulb for heat.
Temperature - the ambient temp is about 70-75 and the basking is 90 at night it drops to about 65.
Humidity - well the gauge in there says its 35%..it goes up to about 75% after I misted.
Plants - Ficus and pothos and jungle vines (same for all cages)
Location - All my chams are in a seperate room...I just go in there to feed and mist them etc. His cage is near a window.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Male ambilobe 7 months
Feeding -Im feeding him daily he stopped eating crickets a week ago and started eating dubia he would eat about 3 -4 a day. Hes back on crickets and eats about 4-5 daily. The crickets are gutloaded ith collard greens and chard sometimes carrots. I just got an email from cricketfood that my order got shipped so Im going to start gutloading with that.
Supplements - Well I used to give him herpitivite once a week, miner-all 0 once a week and repcal. I currently changed my schedule because I found out I wasent doing it right.
Watering - I mist the cage 3-4 times daily with warm water for about 3 min each session.
Fecal Description - He pooped yesterday it was a little watery but just a little nothing major...I'll take a pic next time.
History - He just saw the vet about 3 weeks ago he is currently getting two drops of Gentamicin/Betamethasone is his right eye daily.

I know it seems normal in the pics...but its really worse it comes out more on the right side.

Hey Brian,

I had started to notice my my Male panther getting fat around the neck also a couple weeks back... I thought it was just that... Fat. I slimmed down his diet a little bit and started feeding him every other day and it seems to have returned to normal. Sounds like you have a good schedule.. but I will be following this as would be curious to know what other members might think.

I just went to Dr.Greek about 3 weeks ago. He said hes really healthy and he just gave me some drops for his right eye (he was frequently closing it). Whats gular edema and how do they get it?

Brian

Hey Brian...

Okay I misunderstood and should have looked closer at your pics... The fat neck I referd to in my case was what looked like a build up of fat behind his head... on the back of the neck, different from the swollen throught look your guy has. I am concinced it was just fat since it went down when put him on a diet. Thanks Dodolah for that great link... A lot of good pics on there from our own Mr. Weldon! A lot of good info on there as well. Brian from reading that link... and looking at your pics I agree that a vet should be your next step... Does look like Gular Edema, and like the link states can be very dangerous and should be addressed asap. Good thing is it can be treated apparently. Was this swelling up when you saw Dr. Greek last?

check the link i gave you.
Unfortunately, gular edema is one of those mysterious disease that can be caused by several reasons. So, best to consult dr Greek. Remember, i am speculating. it might not gular edema at all (although it certainly looked like it).

OK...I need more help. I called Mr.Greek and he wont be available until Friday noon. Today when the light went on he just stayed in the same spot where he slept. When I grabbed him he opened his mouth and I noticed some bubbles in his throut...it also has some kind of mucis too. Theres a lot of it so I think thats what was causing his neck to look swollen. What should I do?

Brian

Well the swollen neck is a symptom of gular edema and the mucus/bubbles is a symptom of uri Uri. I have experience treating both although my female veiled contracted gular edema when she was gravid but subsided after she laid. Uri needs to be treated with an antibiotic. Your guy should probably re visit the vet if your seeing bubbles. Uri can be treated with fortaz or baytril but baytril is more likely because its more commonly prescribed by vets. Its still a mystery as to why chams get gular edema but many people suspect its due to over supplementation of calcium w/d3 and theres a few other theory's. I tried everything to rid it from my female veiled but it didnt do anything until she laid and then it was completely gone within 2 days. Take you guy to the vet though, he may even have some sort of infection/abscess in his throat its hard to say.

What should I do in the meantime since my appointments not until friday? Is it noraml for them to become restless, and not have an appetite?

Brian

Those could be symptoms of the uri like the lack of appetite but those are also just behavioral traits of a maturing male. Until you get him into a vet, I'd bump up the temps and make sure you keep things dry but make sure he is plenty hydrated.

Thanks for the help Nicodemayo!! I raised the basking temp to about 96 degrees...I usually dont give my chams heat at night but would you recommend giving him heat?

Brian

just make sure that at night the cage needs to be dry.
and also in between misting until friday.
