Are we in trouble?

So I've been reading a lot of topics about gular edema on the forums recently so I don't know if I'm being paranoid or if there's something wrong with our girl.

Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?

Female veiled, about 8 months (not 100% sure) had her for 31/2 months.

Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?

We have never handled her. She comes out onto her fake tree sometimes.

Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?

She gets 1-3 bugs a day depending on size. She gets locusts, brown crickets, silkworms alternated daily with some roaches in the mix (had dubia, currently fattening up some green bananas) and have received some butter worms too.
Gutloads are fresh veg- carrots sometimes, rocket, bell peppers, apples sometimes, steamed yam and dry gutload made from Sandrachameleon's recipe. We have used bug burger in the past but not for a couple of weeks.

Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?

We use exoterra plain calcium daily, not on silkworm day though, Komodo multivitamin with d3 twice a month. Have just received repashy calcium plus but are still researching on how to fit it in with the feeders and gutloads.

Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?

Dripper pretty much constantly and manual misting about 6 times a day. We see her drinking, sometimes she drinks loads and she enjoys a long shower with the spray bottle. We have good drainage and let the place dry before the next mist.

Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?

Good regular poo, usually once a day. Brown with good consistency, white urates.

History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Sorry all we know is she came from Aberdeen purchased through our local pet shop.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?

Reptibreeze 2x2x4

Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?

Arcadia t5 UVB in hood on top of the enclosure. 2 months old. 75w bulb for basking in a dome fixture raised off the roof with blocks of wood. Lights come on at 9am and go off at 9pm.

Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?

Basking spot is 80f, floor is about mid to low 70's night is low 60's. We have a temp gun and a crappy dial in the tank for quick reference. Has been backed up with a digi thermo hygrometer.

Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?

Humidity is 40-60 spiking to 70-80 during misting. Checked with digi thermo hygrometer. Shower curtain at the back to keep humidity in, it's pretty humid up here most of the time too.

Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?

We have a ficus and a dwarf palm and some fake leaves and vines. There is bamboo in there too.

Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?

In the living room in the corner. She gets all day to herself (apart from school holidays and lunch time) not particularly high traffic. No vents or fans. The top of the enclosure is about 6 feet off the ground.

Location - Where are you geographically located?

Shetland isles uk.

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

She appears to have a swollen area between her front legs, it's sort of on the very bottom of her throat at the bottom of the area that puffs up when she's mad.

Here's the best pic I could get with my phone. She puffs up when we use the good camera. When she puffs up you can't see the abnormal area lol!

I will take her to the vet if that's what she needs. We have a good vet here, not experienced with chameleons but I'm sure he would have some idea since he's a reptile guy and I'm sure he's willing to try. I did register Teal'c when we got her so perhaps he's looked into chams since then.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Angie.

Oh no. I'm so sorry to hear this. You can ask your vet to get in touch with Edinburgh Vet school for you if he is not sure. Think it costs £12 to do this. I have started using Repeshey calcium plus every feeding but I don't use anything else.keep us posted

Thank you Eliza. She could theoretically be gravid, she's been eating and acting normal and ive noticed that she's been taking a little bit longer to snatch up her food.

She's not as swolen as that poor girl.

Edited to add: she has a good laying bin 14x14x14 inches with moist play sand in her tank at all times and there is a blanket hung on that side to give her bin privacy. There's a pice of branch in there and the ficus leaves keep falling in so it looks natural lol!

Thank you Kate that's real sweet. I'll keep that in mind for the visit if we need to go. :)

Thank you Carol.

Can mild cases be treated? Should we treat it by dusting with plain calcium only and stop using some of the gutloads?

Or do you guys think it's vet time?

The only thing that puts me off the vets is that we've never handled her yet. So if a vets trip is not necessary then I'd rather not stress her. Don't misunderstand though, I'll happily let her bite off every finger if she NEEDS to be taken out, I will do anything for my baby girl.

It doesn't look that bad and it could be associated with egg laying. It wouldn't hurt to skip the multivitamins for a couple of weeks, make sure she gets plenty of water and if you can get her some outside time that would be great.

They say the sun is going to shine on Saturday! Get ready-----

Jann thank you! She has been drinking quite a bit this past couple of days so we will just keep it up.

Lol Kate I'll believe it when I see it!

If by some small miracle the sun does come out, do you guys think I should just take the plunge and BRING her out? Really don't wanna stress her but again I will do anything if it will benefit her.

If the sun comes out and it's warm enough perhaps you could take her out on her fake tree. Hopefully that won't stress her out.

We would do that but the tree is in a huge bucket full of sand for stability so it's super heavy! It's a challenge just to get it away from the enclosure when we want to do something lol! Wouldn't want to drop it with her on :(

To be honest I doubt if it will get that warm. Out temps are nothing like the states (or anywhere). What does she do when you put your hand into her viv?

Well when I put my hand up to her she just stares at it. She has only hissed at us a couple of times and tried to snap at me once just after we moved her to her new home. She tolerates me going in to clean up and wipe the plants and she has hand fed a couple of times but she's not that fond! She hissed at me the other day because I tried to hand feed a silk worm lol!

My front garden is a great sun trap so if the sun comes out it'll be hot. I'll check the temps and see if we can figure something out to get her into the sun. Maybe get her on one of the smaller more mobile plants. It's good too because the garden is chips and slabs so there's not really anywhere for her to run!

Instead of putting your hand in, try a stick. Ive used a wooden knitting needle. Put it in front of her front legs and hopefully she will step on. Good luck.

Thanks :)

I tried that with bamboo before and she shot her tongue at the bamboo! Lol! No idea what she thought she was doing, so I'll need to try something bigger I think!

Update

Teal'cs swelling is a little worse today so have called the vet and am waiting for the reptile guy to call me back. I'm going to talk to him about edema, possible egg laying and vitaminA and see what he thinks.

Hopefully we will be able to get her in for an X-ray to see if there's eggs and get a blood test to check vitamin levels.

Will update again later to let you guys know how we get on!

Thank you for the update Angie. I hope all goes well with Teal and it's the normal edema that female can get due to the forming and laying of eggs.
