Yemen Chameleon - Day One

After doing loads of research, setting up the terrarium and trying out different potential lay outs I finally picked up a Yemen this afternoon, he's about 4 inches long (excluding his tail) and I was advised he's around 4 months old.

So far so good : ) He's in a 36 x 18 x 36 Exo Terra with loads of perches and greenery (includes one Umbrella Plant at the mo, will add some more real plants shortly).

Day one has gone pretty well.* He's explored much of the top half of his new home, drunk from the dripper (Zoo Med Little Dripper) and took a bite from one of the plants leaves (after unsuccessfully trying to nibble some of the plastic plants).

I added 3 crickets this afternoon but he's not shown any interest in them, he actually walked past one of them several times, virtually treading on it....What's interesting about this is he seems to have had several attempts at flicking his tongue out as if catching something, but aiming at nothing inparticular (as far as I could tell)...I guess this just part of exploring?* Be interested to hear if anyone else noticed similar behavior with their Cham when they were young / in a new home?

I'm sure I've read somewhere that the crickets should be no bigger than the gap beteen his eyes?* These look like they are slightly bigger than that, so I'm wondering if they're too large for him at present?* I'll pick up some smaller ones tomorrow morning and see how they go...

I have the UVB Lights & Ceramic Heater on a 12 hour timer, within about an hour of the lights/heat turning off (8 PM) he's dropped of to sleep, he looks very cute, with his tail wrapped up and his eyes closed (at least I hope he's just asleep!!)

Handling the crickets is a new experience (this is my first lizard), I'm obviously not bothered by them, the main challenge is picking them up without squashing them and not having loads jump out the box at once.* I didn't try dusting with calcium today, will have a go at that tomorrow....I've been thinking about the best way of doing this, and I think I'll put the calcium in a small plastic bag (like the ones for sandwiches!) add some crickets and give it a shake to ensure they're covered....Any tips on alternative dusting techniques would be appreciated.

Lets see how day 2 goes :)

Thanks for reading, appreciate any tips you can share.....

I use plastic deli cups. I tap the egg crate over the cup to get the crickets in the cup with the calcium dust. I have another cup in which I replaced the bottom with a mesh screen, I dump the crickets/dust into that screen which removes the excess dust. Then I put the crickets into Omar's feeder, Clouseau still likes to free range so he gets the crickets right into his enclosure.

Thank you!

Thanks for the feedback / tips. Just back from my supplier, bought some smaller brown crickets and some meal worms.....See how those go.

In my container where my crickets are kept, there is a cardboard tube (from paper towels). There will be crickets who will congregate in this tube. When dusting crickets, I will pick up the tube and shake the required amount of crickets into a dusting container (just a regular one from Ikea). If there are too many crickets, I will 'filter' the extras back into my main crickets container.

Congrats on your first veiled. My first chameleon was a Veiled too.
