WOW! Tongue fell off!

If a tongue is not working, there is usually a reason. If its not due to an injury, you need to look at your husbandry

My male Jackson sustained a heat injury as a baby. We've come a long way since then and he seems to have control of how much sticky he uses. He just underuses sometimes.

Hello everyone,

All of your responses have been awesome. I called an exotic pet store today and they only had mealworms and crickets. I can get crickets at the local petsmart so no need to run out there to the exotic store. I'm having a hard time finding a few worms. Either silkworms, Phoenix worms or hornworms cannot be found here in Houston, Tx. As one of the largest cities in the US it seems I could find a different snack for my Spike.
Anyway, today I offered him fresh crickets by hand and with tongs. He's not biting. I will mame them and put them in a shallow dish. Maybe this will help.

It's been a long time since he has eaten(besides swallowing his tongue). I'm still worried....

Hello everyone!

Well, he finally gaped and I dropped a cricket in!!

SUCCESS!! I think he's going to make it! He gaped again and I dropped another cricket in and he chewed them up as if he had caught them himself.

I need to think about alternative water source. Hopefully cheap.

I understand spike needs to be looking up so a drip system that drips only when he touched it would be nice(something like a hamster watering bottle I suppose).

The links about the lost tongue were EXTREMELY helpful. Thank you....

Any links for a simple watering system?

Thank You,

Will

Will...the only other thing that concerns me is that where the tongue broke away from the tissue likely left an open "wound". Systemic antibiotics might be something to look at to prevent any infection from occurring?

Kinyonga,

The vet didn't recommend them-he comes highly regarded.

I gently pryed spike's little mouth open this afternoon and the little "stick" that held the tongue is not red. It's a nice pink color like the rest of his mouth.

Not to sound bossy, but I deal with infections where I work-you know just as well that color is a big givaway. Bright red would give it away. Your concern is well taken as the amount of posts you have shows you probably have a ton of experience.

I could be wrong..it's just so darn expensive to even walk in the door at the vets office.....

Thank you ,

Will

If the vet saw it then I would go with what he/she said! Just wanted to mention it in case you didn't know or think about it!

I am happy to hear that your cham is eating again if you decide to try silkies you can get a pod from mulberry farms and it will hold all the food for the silkies you need.

check out the link Silkworms 101 to answer all your questions about silkworms.

you may also call your vet about over hydrating your silkworms. when i had a sick dehydrated cham i used an insulin or tb syringe to add a little extra water to the silkies. same water i misted...not saline...maybe if your cham won't drink and you see signs of dehydration such as yellow/orange urates in stool this will be the answer

Good Luck

Sean

My panther chameleons tongue us now dangling.. he has gotten it back into his mouth twice but it seems to keep falling out. Is there anything a vet can do? he was attempting to eat a cricket like normal and missed seems like his tongue is broken now. I read about what can cause it.. But what fixes it?

This post is very old - you will get a better response if you start your own thread and include the info on the 'How to ask for help' form. It's in a 'sticky' at the top of the health forum.
