My chameleon seems to always want me to specifically put water next to him with droplets so he can lick it up (basically) - so I was wondering if maybe he is being lazy, or maybe there is a greater system I can use that is like the water system for hamsters? He seems not to care that there is water forming on leaves under my drip system...

It might just be the way he likes to drink. Maybe try to give him showers if you are worried about hydration. I just mist the whole cage completely and they usually find their way to the water.
