i think my chameleon would spend all day out of his terrarium if he could. he is a fischer's, and i used to keep a veiled in an umbrella tree with a heat light over it in my living room. this guy is in a glass exo terra terrarium that i am hoping very soon to switch with a reptibreeze screen terarrium. what i want to know is, if he does not stay in the terrarium much, will he still benefit from the uv bulbs at all?

Psi,

Exo Terras have a screen top, with UVB bulbs in mind.

I'm pretty sure the point of the original question was if the cham was out of the cage for most of the day without UVB would he be okay, or did I miss something?

I think it depends on how much natural sunlight gets to the free range. If there are open (screened, please!) windows that let natural sunlight in and he's free ranging for a few hours a day, then it's probably enough, but if he's not getting at least 2 hours of natural sunlight a day he'll need some time under a UVB bulb. As Psi has noted, there are times of the year when many locales don't get much sun. I would assume most places in Canada fall into that definition.

yeah i'm in saskatchewan. its basically the very middle of canada. outside temps lately have been like 11-17 degrees Celsius, and its been raining for about a week, so when he is out wandering on the desk/couch/houseplants/me, i tend to close the window to avoid draft waiting for indian summer to see what happens when i take him outside before he gets cooped up for the winter.

Misread what you were saying. It's been a long day.
