Wild Snakes

I took my kids for a hike at the wetlands by our house today. We went looking for bugs but came across a Snaddle Rake and a California king. My son and daughter both got to hold thier first WC snake and learn a little snake safety. Lucky for them I was the one who got pooped on.:D
Of course we let it go on it's merry way.

awsome and glad everyone is alright

lol Snattle Rake, i guess you meant Rattle Snake :p

Nice finds! Beautiful Rattler! Thank you for not killing it! ;)

I commend you for teaching your children about snakes and field herping. The reptiles would have a much better chance if everyone started understanding them at that young age. :)

I almost got bit by one of those when I was younger walking through the cow fields by my house. I love snakes but am pretty scared of ratties. Cal kings are always so nice I love that you were able to let your kids hold one.

Great pics! Whereabouts was that? Don't know why but I haven't seen a king in the wild in 20 years.

Last week I was out surveying and recording a historic ranch house up in Boulevard, CA and walked right across a HUGE gopher snake. Over 5 feet and gorgeous. I didn't even see him until he was literally between my feet because of overgrown grass! I jumped....and once I landed, I went back and found he was actually quite docile.

It was at Bolsa Chica wetlands in Huntington Beach. I was surprised and really excited to see the King snake. I have seen a Rattler there before. I love hunting snake and lizards. I spent many hours doing it as a kid.

I have to agree that it is a shame to see all animals nowadays in a zoo. However i really love and admire the Black Mamba and am aware of the risk of keeping a D.W.A! never the less i can't seem to steer away from wanting one, and hopefully oneday i will be able to own one of these magnificent creatures!! :)

Nice finds!!! I was out swimming in a creek yesterday and found 4 nice Common Water Snakes on the rocky banks of the falls. Too bad I didnt bring my camera:eek:

We went for the first Spring walk at the wetlands today and saw some snake much to my delight.:)

We also saw a 3' Gopher snake but I was snake wrangling and didn't get a picture. Heard of some other snakes out on the trail from other hikers. These are all right by the beach and a couple minutes from our house.

I'm in HB and have never seen a rattler there except a little baby one. I'll see if I can look for some next weekend.

So seriously...Wild B/W banded kings are nice? (im sure it varies per snake BUT..) My expriences with all cali kings never came away thinking what a nice snake lol.

If that were me handling that cali king, it would be latched on and i would be looking for a butter knife to release its mouth.
