Why?

It could be a sign of illness or eye trouble if they're just closing their eyes and not actually sleeping. Usually it is a sign they didn't get enough sleep the night before. There's a link to the how to ask for help form at the top of the health forum, if you could please fill that out it would be helpful, with special attention to the lighting schedule. :)
 
Chameleons are diurnal, which means happening by day, coming out during the day or occurring every day. A chameleon that sleeps during the day is usually ill. And unable to do daytime things like hunt, feed, hide, move, thermoregulate, get the picture. This is WHY.
 
Closing their eyes in the day can also be the first symptoms of illness so it's always best to get the cham checked by a vet. My first female started closing her eyes and sleeping in the day and she died 5 days later. If your chameleon sleeps in the day then seek veterinary help!
