Why are veiled chameleons always hissing and flaring up everytime I see one? Is it just natural temperament or just stress?

They do have a reputation for being a bit 'territorial' but they are as varied in temperament as any species. Mine are both quite tolerant of me and even my male hasn't hissed or flared in ages 
They do sometimes look more impressive in angry pics though.........

I went to a pets mart to pick up some wax worms for my Jackson's, and I guess I walked too close to this juvenile veiled Cham cage and sure enough he was hissing flaring up at me. I was just like lol did someone not get their crickets? People looked at me as if I was crazy for talking to a chameleon in a baby voice.. And then I awkwardly walked out of the store

HAHAAHA ROFL - you should have told them chams have no ears....then they would know you crazy and wouldn't let you back in
....

I'd hope they wouldn't I feel so bad for some of the reptiles in there, petsmart is just the closest insect provider

well, my female Jackson must have an identity issue - she is always mad or hissing at me - lol but I lover her anyway

Actually the closest provider may be your keyboard!
