Why Did the Baby Turtles Cross the Road?

My boyfriend's mom and sister were walking down the road when they came across these little ones. They were heading from their hatching grounds in a large field, to a pond across two more roads, and a couple of yards full of dogs. So when they found these little ones huddled in the middle of the road, they brought them to me to raise up with some other babies that I have (I've been doing a turtle-raising program for 7 years now). Thought they were so cute! Wanted to share!

Snappers aren't very friendly... Even as babies :p

And here in Southern Indiana, it is turtle season! They are everywhere, and unfortunately I have seen alot of road kill turtles already :( These little ones will go to the local park once they grow up!

Thats good that you rescue them.

There is a sea turtle season here, where you can watch them come on shore and lay their eggs (NC). I just moved here, but Id love to go see that sometime...

Oh that would be so awesome, sea turtles are such cool animals. I always feel bad for those babies that have to run so far to the sea. What a neat experience to be able to go watch! I am quite jealous!

I have no idea when it is, but if/when I see it, I will get video and share it.

They fence off the nests, and make sure they are protected and such.

Theres all kinds of rules during that time period it seems, and I believe researchers stay on the beach 24/7 to make sure no one interferes with them...

I think you are right. I went to NC several years ago, and there was a sea-turtle nest that had been taped off and had a life-guard sitting by it. Of course all we could see was sand in the middle, but there was a big sign posting what it was!
