Why are my springtails dying?

My Bioactive setup seems to be fine. No mold, no weird smell... BUT my springtail culture, that I’m trying to grow ... they keep dying. What am I doing wrong?
I have them in a little sandwich box, charcoal and distilled water. I don’t have it closed, so no top. All I see is those stupid little flies breeding.

I need help!!

You want to keep the container they are in closed. The little flies you see are fungal gnats, they love moisture

Yay I’m having that problem this week. I just moved my culture into a bigger bin and some how gnats got it. I laid out morning wood for them to go onto and got a spoon and spooned out what I could. All that morning wood wasted
