white crystals on nose?

I have purchased a very young veiled chameleon. He is eating well but after the first week I noticed white stuff coming out of one nostril. Iv'e read that it might be dehydration. I have a water fall and we mist his tank to keek it moist. Please if you have any suggestions. Thanks so much.

If u supply him too much he gets those crystals, because he has to give them out of his body because he has it enough.

Ok pinki is wrong. Those are excess salts hes getting rid of. Don't worry this is natural. Bigger problemis the waterfall. Get that thing out of there immediately. It breeds bacteria.

Mine do that too when I have given them too much calcium. Do not put so much on the crickets when you dust them that they look like a ghost. Use a teeny amount. The nose is how they expel the excess. I find it good to set up a schedule for supplementation so you are sure your cham is getting all it needs without overdosing. I keep my little "chamendar" right by my crickets so I can keep track.

When asking health related questions be sure to include the "sticky" note at the beginnning of the Health Forum so the more experienced chameleon keepers can evaluate all that you are doing. I have cut the form and included it here for you.

"Here is some recommended information to include when asking for help in the health clinic forum. By giving this info in your post, you will receive more accurate and beneficial responses. It might not be necessary to include all this info, but the more you do include the better. Please remember that even the most knowledgeable person can only guess at what your problem may be. Only an experienced reptile vet who can directly examine your animal can give a true diagnostic of your chameleon's health.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - What kind of cage are you using? What is the size?
Lighting - What kind of lighting are you using? How long do you keep the lights on during the day?
Temperature - What temperature range have you created? Basking spot temp? What is the temperature at night?
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels?
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Location - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas?

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon.
Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What kind of schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
Supplements - What are you dusting your feeders with and what kind of schedule do you use?
Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings.
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.
Current Problem - The current problem that you are concerned about.

Pictures can really help as well."

Oh, I'm glad this question was posted, as I noticed last night that the inside of Joyce's nostrils was white, and I was worried it might mean she was getting sick.

So my question on this is how I change my supplementation. I use TINY amounts when I supplement, and so far have only used the mutivitamin once in the three weeks I have had her, and the calcium with D3 has been used twice. I haven't used any calcium without D3 so far because the gutload I get from cricketfood.com has calcium in it, as does the hydrating gel I give the crickets. So am I overdoing the calcium within the gutloading? Or does it contain too many other vitamins and I need to start rotating it with other types of gutloading?

Right now Joyce eats about every two days (getting her big girl pants on and eating like an adult!), anywhere from 3-7 crickets each time, sometimes a couple of superworms instead of crickets (though she's not big on these so far). I've ordered silkworms but they aren't here yet, and have had the local petstore also order some other feeders for me (hornworms, butterworms). I'm considering ordering flies as well, and am trying (gulp) to work my way up to the concept of roaches.

She doesn't get much time outside right now, but has a Reptisun 5.0, and all her cage temps and humidity are on target.

Suggestions?

The Waterfall thing...I have one....but all of the posts that I have read is telling me to get rid of the thing... the biggest problem is that it will end up being a breeding ground for just about every bacteria that will hurt your reptile. While it looks cool, it will end up hurting your chameleon in the long run. You could potentially keep the pump in but you would have to take it out every day and (probably more often would be better) and disinfecting the entire system

I end up taking out the pump and using it as a catch dish for my drip system. which it work pretty good as....it keep everything from getting at the standing water. I still need to disinfect it every day though....I only have one cage. and I feel a little better....

Any thoughts on using the remaining portion of the water fall as a catch basin?

Howdy Wendy,

If you are not seeing white POWDERY stuff then you might just be seeing the internal white nostril skin :).

Oh, good to know! No, it was just on the very inside of her nostrils. Now that she lets me take close-ups of her without turning black and trying to eat the camera, I can show you! :D

Just bumping this up, as I wanted to make sure that Joyce is showing just the normal white on her nose, and not crystals I need to worry about?

Thanks. I've been mainly following the one on Brad's website, this one looks a little different. It seems everybody does things a little differently, it starts to get a bit confusing, so I'm just trying to keep a close eye on her and check in with the experienced keepers to make sure I'm doing things right. This forum is such a great place to get help!

Im glad this came up as well because ive noticed my baby cham had that on her nose the other day. I just thought it was left over shedding because she got rid of it the same day!
I'll make sure i dont overdose my cham either!

using the search, i found this thread too.
well i just picked up my baby veiled today and also noticed some "white skin" or something around the nostrils. it obvsiously worried me a little so i thought i would look into it. i dont think it would be over supplementation as i just got him and he would more likely be dehydrated. any thoughts?

well it turns out that it was just some skin that was being shed. should all be cool
i will post some pics of the cham when i get some.
