Whats this?, Help!

I'm just surprised no one's though of that yet.

Thought of what ? That you think its a husbandry issue ? Rather than throw it out there, how about you first explain why you think that, what experience (personal or by researching the work of others) leads you to say that "I think there may be an under-lying husbandry issue"? Enlighten us as to what such issues are for you to make that conclusion, or think it ? How far does one have to drive, even here in the U.S., to find a vet that has ever studied underlying husbandry issues that cause such as this ? Even if its a cloacal prolapse, there isn't a vet in the world that could pinpoint a husbandry cause (short of it eating a lego), and most would be hard pressed to even suggest culprits. No one viewing this knows what it is with any certainty, and yet you already think its husbandry ! While a check by an experienced vet, not easy to find anywhere, might yield some insight, I am just curious as heck as to how you came to think it was husbandry ? "Bad bowels"? Enlighten us all please ! Thanks in advance.

I was just wondering if it was poo, caused by him eating some soil or something, I wasn't saying it was a prolapse. No need to get offensive, Jim. I'm not calling myself an expert or anything close to it. I wasn't even referring to a prolapse, I'm trying to think on the brighter side and HOPE it's just impaction or a bad poo.

For those that have not experienced it ....

Prolapses can occur at almost anytime, with any sex. While a female chameleon cannot suffer a hemipenal prolapse, they also seem to be more prone to cloacal prolapses, if for no other reason than that so much more is expected of what happens via the female cloaca. As noted, they can be quite random. Sibling animals, under identical husbandry conditions ..... one prolapses and dies. The other lives a long life.

In further explanation, it is one thing to suggest that a knowlegable vet may be able to provide some insight. It is also one thing to say that such a vet may be able to suggest husbandry changes. To conclude that it is likely, or to "think" it the cause, is quite a leap, even for a vet.

Jacqui, you caused no friction. Some folks are exceedingly quick with a keyboard is all. Happens every day in the Forums.

You got some very good advice from some members here. Soaking is always a great first reaction. Topical antibiotics will also help to keep infection in check, and also help to lubricate. Vet visits may be within your means. Maybe not. I can sympathize with the economics of such.

Licensing keyboards would be akin to censorship, and I am, in the end, a Libertarian at heart. But sometimes I wish

Hi Syn.

I received your request and I know you are new to Chameleon Forums and the hobby in general and I'm not about to stifle your excitement. However you do need to realize your limited experience level and not to offer advice that you don't know about or can't back up with solid proof. This does cause a little dissention amongst the experienced keepers to see improper advice being given on a frequent basis. You are not a doctor. Nobody is. Well a few members are, but they certainly aren't going to diagnose a problem from a few pics on the interweb. Not possible.

Unlike other threads, which Iam well aware of, I'm not seeing blatant 'attacks' on your character. I'm leaving it open for now. Happy chamming Syn.

Good luck with your chameleon Jaqui. It may just be a dried up sperm plug but it could be something worse so I'd recommend a professional have a look-see at it.

Cheers,
t

How about the vet?

So do you plan on going to a vet? It does not look like a sperm plug. Especially after soaking. It looks like dried tissue. The thing that you said came off a couple of months ago probably was a sperm plug. Otherwise it never would have come off.

I'd still like to know where he is pooing from...the vent like normal? Is the poo firm like it should be or runny? It still looks like a prolapse of some sort, intestinal or hemipenes. Either way it needs to see a vet. Can you get him to one?

I wonder if this is a possibility- and I'm just saying a possibility-

in the second photo he posted, the thing seems to be protruding out one side of the vent. Could it be possible that the thing he soaked off a few months ago was one sperm plug from one side- and that this thing is the sperm plug from the other side?

Just a possibility. I'd still love to see him go to a vet. Unless of course after he soaked it the thing came off. Afterall, he does say the cham seems to be his normal happy self. If it's just the second half of a sperm plug, and it soaks off, then that would explain why the cham seems fine, energetic, and is still pooping and all. I guess I'm just hoping for the best.
