What the smallest size you would get as a beginner?

If I don't see a panther that I want at the reptile show coming up, I'll order one online. I've been looking at a lot of them on the kingsnake classifieds, but a lot of them seem really young, like 4 weeks, 6 weeks, etc. What would be the youngest or smallest size you would get as a beginner. The cage they will be living in for a while is 18x18x30.

I like to wait until they are atleast 3 to 4 months old before I sell my panthers. That gets them off to a good start.
