What did I just find in my dubia bin?!? This thing is sick looking! It moves when I touch it! A shedding roach gone horribly wrong?!?

It wasn't a wax worm. That used to be a king worm/ super worm.

Or a meal worm...

It looks like some kind of beetle pupae.

How big is it?

Edit: And they do look like alien monsters! the first time I saw one I was in awe.

Ok. Thanks guys and gal! I looked it up and apparently it IS a pupa of a superworm. I guess perhaps I dropped one in accidentally! Whew! I was gonna say... :)

100% the pre-beetle form of a super worm. if you keep it at room temperature in a simple container with air flow, and let it sit for a couple of weeks it will hatch. if you get the chance to see it hatch, it will be white at first, but after a few hours it should be black. your chameleon will almost definitely not eat it. i don't know what it is, but most chameleons just don't pay any attention to them. and they do not bite by the way, and they are kind of cool to play with.

this thing that I have now or the beetle?

When it hatches it is fun to play with. I have never been bitten by one, but beware, those things can climb just about anything. Their feet have the classic beetle "thorns" that they use to grip to things, and it can be quite a pain if they grab on to you in the wrong spot and you have to pull them off.

In the form that you have it in now, it will sit and do absolutely nothing for a minimum of a week (depending on when it entered that state)

How can you tell the difference between a mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) and a Superworm (Zophobas morio) pupae to be able to identify it with 100% certainty?

I am sure there are markers but I have no idea what they are.

To be honest, I do not know, however, if it is about 1 inch long, I would place a bet that it is a morio

I've only bred Mealworms and most of the pupae were under 3/4 but there were a few that got close to an inch!

I suspect the reason I can't find anywhere on the internet what the markers would be is because nobody cares so I should probably not worry about it! :D

Definitely nothing to worry about unless you are looking into breeding. I think the bigger concern here is what the heck the pupae was doing in with your dubia.

It's highly likely that he fell in when I was xferring supers into the feeding bowl. There's no lid on the dubia bin. It all makes sense now. Thank y'all!
