What states are Panther Chameleons illegal?

I was told that many types of chameleon are illegal in many states. Is anyone aware of what states the Panther is illegal in? Thanks

Thankyou! That is what I thought but then at a reptile pet store the so called specialist was saying that they are not legal. I'm pretty sure it was to try to convince me to purchase a crested gecko! Thanks again!

because way back when, proper equipment for them was not available, it really does not apply to today but they havent done anything to change the law. you can get a permit though.

Illegal to import and illegal to keep are two different things.
You can keep a Jackson's in Hawaii providing you obtained it there.

Brad's right It is illegal to import. You can have a Jackson though if you obtain it in Hawaii. I know that from first hand from when I lived there. I bought two from a local guy selling them and had them as pets on base of all places with no issues!

i wish i could OBTAIN a panther cham here ive had dreams of finding them in the bushes in my back yard lol it was a teal and red flavored one

I wonder if whoever is behind the law feels kind of stupid knowing the situation has changed and they did nothing to help the situation change, but instead hindered the progress of knowledge by making it's pursuit illegal (it hasn't changed much by the way- the equipment was available for a long time- you get get vita-lites since the 80s at least, maybe the 70s and vita-lites worked just fine when I started breeding veileds and panthers and jacksons in the early 90s. What has changed mainly has been faster importation and better understanding of how to clean the animals up from parasites and better understanding of basic care they require).

I live in maine and they are not illegal anymore thanks to the Maine Herpetological Society. They recently helped to add over 40 new species to the legal list including chameleons, poison dart frogs and other turtle and snake species.

I think the reason behind most laws against importing animals is fear of them getting released into the wild and pushing some native species out of the food chain. The Jacksons in Hawaii were released by a store owner. We've all seen pictures of gigantic snakes in Florida. Sadly, it's not uncommon for people to buy exotic pets that they are, in the long run, unable to care for. Many stupidly release them thinking that's somehow "humane". It's a legitimate concern. San Diego has a flock of "wild" parrots....totally not supposed to be here and sufficiently big and aggressive enough to have driven sea gulls out of one area (and sea gulls are big and aggressive!). They are the result of people releasing them, probably not having planned on the fact that they would outlive the original owner.
