What kind of lizard is this?

Just found this guy outside. My wife left my house only to return back asking me if big wild lizards should let you walk up and pet them? I said no if anything they scamper away even before you could get close. She said well, there is this big lizard in the drive way and it let me go up to it and pet it. I looked only to find this. I put him an extra aquarium i had lying around and i put some crickets in where it proceeded to eat at least 3-4 of em.It seems very docile and i was wondering what kind it is. I have seen them before back in my childhood when i would catch wild lizards in my backyard but i never found out what kind of lizard it was. Any ideas?

What was the temp when she found him? May have been chilled or injured. Looks like a northern alligator lizard to me (given your location the most likely ID) even though the pic isn't clear.

Although the position of the tail is throwing me off because of the photo quality, I see a lot of signs pointing to Bearded Dragon

its not a bearded dragon....... bearded dragons are from Australia
And quite popular here in the US. Unfortunately, many people buy them, can't handle them, and then release them. The pet store I frequent has had more than one Beardie brought in that people found on the sidewalk (and I have nursed some of them back to health).

I currently own six Beardies and while not an expert, am quite knowledgeable on them.

I could see bearded dragons living and breeding in S.Cali, seems like a perfect enviroment for them, but the lizard in the photo looks alot like a alligator lizard.

Looks like an aligator lizard

I think the title says it. It looks like an alligator lizard, and we used to use one in education programs. It was as docile as can be.

I tried to sharpen it up and make it easier to see....my guess would be a not very healthy alligator lizard (that's a really skinny front leg).

From the markings yes I would also say alligator lizard. If it is sick or injured maybe you can try to help it? assuming you know a lot about lizards...

well you need to help it if your finances can afford it. make sure you do research on how to house / take care of it though. wouldnt wanan make matters worse for it....you could always keep it ouside in a screen cage so it can get the real sun.
