We found these bugs in our yard. Are they safe to feed?

The first bug, a katydid would be very good to feed off. The stick insect also looks like a good meal choice. But I'd do a little more reseach on him first. You might have a full mailbox with PM's in the next hours, asking for these, if you can find anymore. :)

Great finds!

wow you found a mating pair of stick insects..technically you could breed that pair and make some more
:D

Thanks guys! Looks like a little snack for Padre on the first bug. :D He sure looks different than the other katydid I had. Guess there's different kinds of katydids?

Do we have katydids in callifornia? I swear I found a bug that looks just like it. But I didn't feed it off

yes we have them here..ive found a few..normally they come out around june (when you can find mantids) still pretty rare..we normally have the bright green ones here in cali..

The first one is a Katydid, but the second one is a phasmid and they ARE NOT SAFE TO FEED!!!!!! They emit a noxious substance called turpine that is not pleasant. Did they emit it when you picked them up? It is a white frothy looking substance and it smells absolutely awful. BEWARE!!!!

those versions of stick insect look fine to me, yes they are technically called phasmids, most are not bad, mostly the spiny ones(ive had a few pairs fairly large, but relaxed insect)..but thoses particular ones i used to catch in nc and they never seemed to release that nasty smell (like when you catch a snake..they release that nasty snake butt juice, lol)

Jann, the katydid is safe, but the phasmid (I forgot the latin but it has a few common names; devil walker, palmetto phasmid, etc.) will harm your chameleon with noxious chemicals they shoot out.
