What is your panther's basking spot temp?

Hi All,

Thought I'd ask the question direct as lost in the middle of another thread at the mo.

Conflicting info on basking temps.

Simba's new enclosure is wood with glass doors and a mesh top. Dimensions are 50" high x 36" wide x 16" deep. Have just replaced 60w with a 100w bulb and basking temp seemed to level out at about 32C/90F. Simba just hung round the basking spot from a few mins after I changed it and just kept changing sides to toast LOL

I was interested in what your panther's basking temperature is so I can work out if Simba's is ideal/too cold/too hot???

Would really appreciate your answers.

Thanks

It depends on age and sex:

Adult male: 88-90 degrees F
Juvenile: 80-85 degrees F
Adult Female 80-83 degrees F

I think 90F is good, especially in a cage that large. He has plenty of room to move over more or less to adjust himself, so I think that's good. Even if he is young. Just make sure he has access to a much cooler temp in that cage, around 70-75F so he really has lots of temps to choose from. Your cage sounds enclosed so temps can build up a little more than in an all screen cage.

My own (male) panthers get a basking spot of about 85-87F but during the middle of the day on a hot day the room does warm up a bit so it may make it up to 90 and then comes back down. 85-90 is pretty normal for juvie-adult panthers and veileds.

He's a 2 year old male so looking like 87-90 will be good for him?

PLENTY of places for him to get well out of the way of basking spot if he needs to cool down ;)

Thanks for the replies, keep em coming x

Checked temps at lunch time today while home for lunch.

Basking spot is levelling at around 32C now (around 89.5-90F) :D

Thanks for your advice.

Also had to perform a quick rescue mission thisavo too!! LOL
He'd managed to get to one of the vent holes on the back wall, but was just hanging onto the mesh by one of his front legs!!! No vines nearby for him to grab so I put my hand underneath his back legs and tail (which he used to gratefully grab my hand) THEN the cheeky bugger had the cheek to gape at me!!! I was thinking...please don't bite me!!! LOL

Slowly moved him to a branch where he climbed up. Came back from the shop and he was still there where I'd left him!!! LOL He looked most disgusted!!!

He was probs thinking....ewwwww she touched me!!! I'm so humiliated!! LOL That'll take him about 3 days to get over!!! HAHAHAHA ROTFL

Funny little characters aren't they!?!?!

I keep my males from 85-90 depending on the individual. Some of them like it warmer, others like it cooler. If they bask for really long periods of time I raise the temp, and if they open their mouth while basking I lower it. I always make sure they cannot burn themselves though.

my lamp to hot?

Ive got a 5m panther he had a black heat "light" that I had on a thermostat but I was worried about him getting burnt so had it only at 30 on the mesh but he never went near it used to hang from the mesh by the uv bulbs on 25c so ive changed it for a heat/uv light but can't put it on the thermostat so the nearest branch is 30c he sat under it today for the first time basking like he dose in the sun I came back about 1.5hours and he was still there totally black with his mouth open, is this ok? Would he move if he was REALLY too hot??? Im also worried that if he gose on the mesh under it its at 40c and might burn him. Though he dose struggle now to get on the mesh I think the only reson he was going up there was because it was to cool below for him. Worried but cant move the lamp any further away as the ceiling is in the way. What shall I do!!?? :S
