Chameleon Info:
•Your Chameleon – Veiled Chameleon, male, 5 months, 2 months in our care
•Handling – We take him out every other day to let him free range on the ficus outside of our house
•Feeding – We feed him crickets, superworms, silkworms, hornworms, depends on the day 3 to 5 large crickets (sometimes more sometimes less) plus about 5 worms. Depending on our work schedule we try to feed him a few crickets or worms in the morning and then later in the afternoon∕evening, we also have a feeding cup where we leave 5 crickets or so which he sometimes uses. We gut-load our crickets with complete cricket food gel, veggies and fruit (potato skins, orange, carrots, zucchini, bell pepper, apple, strawberries etc.), we add oatmeal and some calcium powder to the fluke that is in the superworm container
•Supplements – Rep-Cal Calcium, Exo-Terra Multivitamin (with D3) We dust the crickets every other day with calcium
•Watering – We have a dripper which is on all day, we mist the enclosure 2 to 3 times a day, we spray our cham 2 to 3 times a day, he usually shies away when we do it in the enclosure for a bit, started doing it when he is free ranging outsidefor a few minutes he does not seem to mind it that much, we have never seen him drink
•Fecal Description – his poop looks normal brown with white urate, decent size, firm not runny
•History – We bought him in a reptile store where we believe he has been a couple of weeks prior to purchase

Cage Info:
•Cage Type – Screen cage 24x24x48
•Lighting – 24” linear 10.0 Reptiglo Bulb, 24" linear 2.0 Reptiglo, Basking light = Exo Terra Sunglo 60 Watts. We turn on the lights around 7am sometimes 9am, we turn them off around 8pm
•Temperature – We have 2 thermometers one near his basking spot on top of the cage (90 degrees), one in the lower part (80 degrees), haven’t measured overnight temps yet
•Humidity - We have Hydrometer, humidity level is at 40 when not misted, 70 to 80 when misted
•Plants – We have 4 live plans (Hibiscus, Croton, Pothos, English Ivy, we also have 2 fake vines
•Placement – Cage is located in the living room (we are gone most of the day), about 5 feet to the left of the ac vent which does not blow directly at the cage, top of the cage is about 5.6 feet from the floor
•Location – Miami Beach, Forida

Current Problem – Bob does not seem to be eating as much as before, we just got new silkworms which he loved before and now he is not touching them. Today we noticed that he has to throw out his tongue more than once to catch his crickets which he has never done before. It seems as that he can't measure the distance right as he throws his tongue out too short. What do you think might be wrong with him?? Some people have also said that his eyes seem sunken in, he has been that way since we got him and we mist him sufficiently, although we never see him drink...any advice is appreciated.

I think the repti glo 10.0 might be 2 strong for his eyes
I would change it to a reptisun 5.0

when they get older they tend to eat less

misting some more and adding a dripper will make
sure he gets the water he needs

ok, as long as his urates are white, then he is drinking. It is just obviously when you are not around and you say that is alot so i wouldn't worry about that. Yes as they get older they due tend to eat less, but at 5 months they still should have a great appetite, but chameleons have been known to go on "hunger strikes". Sometimes they will get bored with the same old food, although you do seem to be providing a good variety. I agree with the other member here and I would get rid of the 10.0. Get a 5.0. It is adequate lighting for a 24 X 24 X48. If you want more light in the cage to brighten it up get another dome and put a low wattage regular bulb in it. The tongue shooting could be an eye issue. If they cannot shoot thier tongue sometimes it is due to injury or possibly mbd. I'm not saying that is the case here. Why don't you try using the 5.0 and see if things improve.

I agree on getting rid of the 10.0 bulb and switching to a 5.0. Also are you using calcium with d3? If so he may be getting way to much d3 if your using it along with a multivitamin with added d3.

I wouldn't think a 5 month old chameleon would want to eat less. My older chams didn't start to slow down until around 8-9 months. If you could, I would get a fecal done. The tounge problem can be an issue with your supplement schedule. At 5 months I dusted every day with calcium, and I dusted with multivitamins and d3 twice a month each.

We will definitely replace the bulb asap, today his aim was back to normal but he only had three large crickets! We have been trying to take him outside every day to let him free range, usually for half an hour. Is that too much sun exposure and d3 intake for him?!!? (we live in miami beach btw).

We don't give him any additional d3 except twice a month when we give him his multvitamin.

Thank you for your replies.

No, 1/2 hour is not at all too much! The more sunlight the better. just make sure if you are going to have him outside for prolonged periods of sunshine that he has a place to get out of the sun if he wants to. Think about in the wild, they could bask all day if they wanted to so 1/2 is not much at all. I live in lake worth and i try to get my chamelon outside for atleast 2 hours a day of sun and I wish I could do more, but don't always have the time to sit and babysit!. It is hard because I don't have an outdoor enclosure yet and you have to sit there and monitor them VERY closely. I think you saw my thread about the hawk?! There are people who house their chameleons outside all the time and they have access to the sun all day long.

Ha ha...Carol I know what you mean with the baby sitting, I am freaking out about the birds close by all the time! But thanks for the advice I will try to keep him out longer whenever I can, we have hibiscus and ficus in front of our house so he gets shade and we always mist him when he is out as well.
