i've been seeing common cases of mouth rot lately, and am also helping a girl over facebook with her new veiled who has it.

but what i don't know, is what is generally the cause of this disease? is it due to a pass-on from a feeder?

What we think of as "mouth rot" is actually not a disease in itself, but the result of a bacterial infection in the mouth or gums. These infections could be caused by different things including a cut from a feeder spine or leg, an abscessed temporal gland (but just why the glands tend to abscess may not be clear), sores resulting from nutritional deficiencies that depress the cham's immune system, maybe from an impacted tooth, a jaw fracture, anything that breaks the surface of the mouth or gum. The specific bacteria causing the infections may not always be the same ones either.

Instead, think if it like a generalized symptom like a stopped up nose...several things can cause it...an allergy, a cold, a virus, inhaling an irritant. Treating the stopped up nose would need to be specific to the cause not just the symptom.
