Worm-Paracite treatments?

Hey, Just got in some WC Fishers Chameleons they look and need some medication soon. So I would like all the Best info on the latest Paracite & deworming items? I live in a very small town
Hundreds of miles from any real reptile vets. So maybe with some good info from this site. I can help teach the local vet some of what I learn also? Thanks

Hey I have the same problem, qualified reptile vet is 5 hours away. My local dog, cat, coe & horse vet it trying but has a wat to go. If you get his the Linda David book on reptiles that is a start. Then I followed up with parasites in reptiles. He can do a fecal float if you explain it is the same as a fecal on any other animal except smaller. Then if you have parasites get some Panacur, they will have it at a local feed store or the vet will have it.

My 3 basic chameleon books are:

Chameleons, There Care & Breeding Author Linda J. Davison

Understanding Reptile Parasites Author Roger J. Klingberg

Chameleons, Care & Breeding of Jackson's, Panther's Veiled and Parson's
Authors Gary Ferguson, Kenneth Kalisch and Sean Mckeown

The 1st two you can buy from the forum bookstore, the other one you can get cheap on half.com

Linda Davison's book tell you the dose for panacur and several other drugs and makes a vet who knows nothing about reptiles think you do!!!

Good luck, let me know how it goes.

Laurie

Reptaid has been known to help with things like these - but you should get a fecal done if possible.

Unless a fecal is done you won't know what, if any, parasites your chameleons have...so how are you going to know that you are using the right medication? Different meds are needed to kill different parasites.

Howdy Laurie,

Glad you mentioned the Linda Davison book . A looong time ago I posted (maybe on another site ) the corrections to her dosage charts. Some of them are accidentally off by a 10x factor. I remember that the Bayril one was pretty obvious since the weights started at 500 grams and went ot 5000 grams . It should have been 50 grams to 500 grams with the same dosages listed in the chart. I spoke with Linda about it. She said that the editor goofed and it went to press before she caught it. I think the Amikacin had the same 10x problem. It looks like the dosage for Panacur is ok (I use 1cc/kg too). I can't be sure about her Flagyl dosages since the strength of the Flagyl isn't in her write-up. I usually use the 2nd Ed. Klingenberg book for most of my dosages anyway .

P.S. Our very own "Debmonster" forum member supplied some of her chameleon's photos for Linda's book :D.

Thanks Dave,

I just printed the corrections and added them to my copy of the book. That also explains why I called Steve twice to question the baytril dosage prior to giving it to my two chams after getting it from the yet.

Thanks Dave & Laurie. Your input is so important and very valuable to the Small Town, Inexperienced Vet, situation allot of us live with today. My purpose to post stuff like this is to work on things that will train the Unknowlageable Vets & pet owners of the world. To gain the info needed to treat "CHAMELEONS!"
Everything we learn and give (pass) forward is to help the not so knowlageable, treat and care for a species that is much misunderstood & misinformed. But! interm, being mass produced for favorable profit without concern of the animals longevity after the sale!
People Like us that care for the life of the wonderful pet we just purchased and want it to stay alive.
I see people here so concerned and willing to spend the dollar to keep their new found pet alive and healthy. Keep up the good work, and info sharing, I see within this site! Hats off to all those dedicating time to help those in need, and for the future of well treated and cared for Pets.:)

Very Well Said Titan!

Thanks Titan, I am glad we are all in this together! I really is great for those of us who just want to learn to care for and love our chams. Like you, I am no longer near a city or reptile vet. If an animal is really sick I will drive the 5 hours, but working with the local vet and having the reptile vet in Boseman will to cousult with the vet here is priceless. With luck maybe you can work out the same type of deal. My two vets will email pics of my kids back and fourth so they are seeing the same thing. I think the vet here in Havre is starting to like chameleons, he always thinks mine are beautiful, and so far none have bit him!!:D
