What does petco do about sick animals?

Stopped in petco today just to look with my kids. They had a TJJ male and female(luckily separated). The female had eyes closed and looked rough… I respectfully let them know about it and they were nice and respected my cham experience. They said a vet is supposed to be seeing her and they were aware she isn’t doing well. So I was just curious, does a vet actually look at their sick animals or are they just BSing?

I think it BS. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear they throw away the animal and take it as tax loss.

Interesting question that while I don’t have an answer for, I do have more questions about it. Was there a sign saying she wasn’t for sale? If someone walked up and wanted to buy her, would they have sold her in such condition and if so, would they have said anything about her being sick? In the past, somewhere I’ve heard that the sick animals are kept ‘out back’ until the vet can see them.

The thing that gets me is, while the company may not care about the animals well being very much. I feel like most of the workers do, the problem is most of them are inexperienced. Like the manager there only ever had a bearded dragon.

Honestly I was wondering the same thing. I was in a rush and trying to herd my kids out so I didn’t think to ask those questions

You could check on her in a couple of days on Monday or Tuesday…see how she is and ask about her vet visit. The answers and how they’re given would probably be telling.

What I don’t get is the changes they could make for their animals would be cheap and arguably less maintenance. Like they should just use bioactive substrate in all of their enclosures and get rid of the damn bark.

Petco and PetSmart usually have their own vets in the back of the store. That’s probably the vet that looks at them.

The sad thing about chain stores, is that it's a bit like McDonald's. No matter where you go, everything will be the same.

Does the head manager know better than to put the Cham in a 12"x24" glass enclosure? Sure, maybe. Can he do anything about it? No. They're told by someone in a big fancy office that every store has to follow the same floor plan and system. Sick animals are put into a care room with other sick animals to be monitored. If they were sold to someone, the animals get to see a contracted Vet; because insurance covers it.

The reason I quit working at PetSmart at 16.

I had a sales person at petco where I lived in AZ admit to me that they rarely get the reptiles vet care. Instead they pull them from the front and put them in the back..... Which you then know what happens. They are write offs for them and nothing more.

Don’t doubt it at all. I mean really what are they going to do, pay more treating the animal than what the animal cost… good luck getting a corporation to do that
