My chameleon bedded down early today, and I went in to clean his cage, I was touching his tail and he started making a noise I've never heard before.. it sounded like he was expelling air. I touched him again to try and elicit the same response, he turned his head to me, opened his mouth and made a sound as if he was breathing out heavily again. Is this what hissing sounds like? he has never hissed before, so i dont know what it sounds like. Or is hissing more like a real "hissss" sound?

I don't believe him to have any sort of URI because his breathing is normal otherwise...

Oh yes that sounds like hissing to me. My chameleon does the same thing. She opens her mouth and hisses if my hand gets close to her but once I get her out of the cage she is fine. Hissing is normal. I believe your chameleon is perfectly fine.

They open their mouths (gape) and hiss when angry! Sometimes though they make a little short, sharp 'Pfft!' noise to let you know that they don't approve of your presence!:D

ok cool--yea i just didn't know if this expelling of air, or a heavy breath sound was hissing or something else.
