What a year so far

Just an update on the events of the last few days.

First, one of the T. quadricornis females deposited 16 big beautiful eggs for us.

Second, today we have a confirmed T. deremensis copulation. I really wasn't sure if the deremensis female was large enough yet but after a few seconds of "hard to get" she let him do his thing.

If this is a sign of things to come I'm looking forward to an exciting and eventful year! :)

Thanks,

Luis

Happy 2010

Congrats on the eggs! Looks like the new year is going to be good.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on laying conditions for your quads. Especially the size and depth; any thoughts on sand vs. mixes too.

Best wishes. David

Thanks everyone!

David,

I normally use a 70/30 mix of coco coir and sand but she did pace the bottom of the cage for a few days before she starting digging. Josh has experienced good results using a mix of sand, vermiculite and orchid bark with the occasional addition of top soil.

The eggs were only about ~3 inches below the surface and were longer than they were round. Still rather large eggs, a bit longer and just about as wide as a panther egg.

Hope that helps!

Wow Luis between you & I there will be baby quads!!!!!!!!! Congratulations, I am glad all is going the way it should be for you.

I am hoping my first clutch, laid 8/12/09 will start hatching soon but they don't look good. The second clutch, laid 10/29/09, looks picture perfect .

Eggs, breeding, what else is going on down your way? How are the 2 juvi quads Josh & Michelle send down? My little girl, Jet is still perfect in every way except she is a picky eater. Tuffy doesn't know any food items she doesn't like, and this from one who has to be "fatten up" when go arrived. That is no longer an issue.:)

Good luck with the eggs and with the Deremensis. Blue baby deremensis are so cute. Okay...so are quads!

Deremensis are fussy about where they lay the eggs...so be prepared!

Thanks again everyone!

kinyonga,
I've read they like to deposit their eggs near roots that bulge from the ground, or in between tree roots. I have quite a few Cypress Knees that I use for various reasons in some of our vivaria. I'm hoping these will be natural enough for them to feel comfortable. We'll see what happens when the time comes! Also, any additional tips and tricks are always welcome! ;)

Laurie,
Well, I woke up to two U. lienatus eggs this morning and will be pairing up the male deremensis with one of the other females that has been roaming her cage for a few days now. It's very obvious they all think it's breeding season. The male and two of the larger females have been pacing their cages for a couple of weeks now and feeding has decreased, which I found odd at first since deremensis are eating machines!

The quads are doing very well. The adult male is extremely tame and runs up to me when I walk by the cage. He's in the mood too but he'll have to wait until the females are ready. The young ones are doing awesome. It's very obvious that I was sorely mistaken about which gender ours were. It turns out we had two females after all, and with the one Josh and Michelle sent over, it's like we have one our babies back.

I have some pictures but I haven't done them up yet. I'm actually working on a few today and I owe it to Josh and Michelle to post a few soon. :)

Thanks

Thanks very much Luis for the specifics of your laying bin. It gives me confidence that mine is OK. One female quad is investigating it now. I'll add a grapewood burl; they're the cypress knees of California.

Congrats Luis! Hopefully my eggs will all hatch out too! 16 huh? Not bad. The little girl I'm sure. The older girl is an egg machine averaging 20!!! You'll see! Can't wait to see pics of the young ones. You will be able to do the little male justice in a pic unlike myself! He is a beast, huh!

Hey Josh,

Yes, it was the young lady who deposited the 16 eggs but it looks like Momma maybe held some "seed starter" back and is harboring a clutch of her own. We'll see what happens in the coming weeks. :)

That young male is such a shy one that I will have to arrange a "set" to photograph him in! I'll see what I can do today. ;)
