Waxworms

How often and how many waxworms can I give my female Panther Chameleon? I am aware that they are fatty and don't want to give her too many.

I myself would use them as treats once in awhile, and besides being fatty if your cham loves them they might go on strike against their staple, I usually only buy them to turn them into moths which karma LOVES.

I bought some last week, the first time in ages as a treat for Tommy. He got to have two before he died, but these ones are massive! Bigger than Monty's head! Amy enjoyed hers too, but seeing as she's a fatty anyway I will pupate these and breed them so I can get some teeny tiny baby waxies so Monty and the cresties can have a treat too! My cresties will love the moths as well I think!

That makes sense thank you. She has been a bit funny with her food recently and today is the first time that I have tried her with them and she ate two straight off. That's why I thought I had better check. How do you turn them into moths? Mine are in the fridge. :)

OMG Tiff I am so sorry. I didn't realise he had died. :(
My cresties like the waxworms for a treat too but the ones I get are fairly small. I can imagine both chams and cresties would love moths. I just need to know how to do it. :)

I took a milk jug, cut off the top so I can easily stick my hand in, put oatmeal and a squirt or two of honey in the bottom, enough so they can dig if they choose, but not too sticky so they don't get stuck, put twigs and crumpled into ball waxpaper in there, a screen net over top (I just used a pantyhose, easy to take off and on), put them in my closet for 2-3 weeks, and wala! they'll keep breeding with the crumpled waxpaper or you can feed them off right away. You can grab them by one wing and they flap around, really gets the attention of chameleons!

Any particular temperature? And I don't suppose you have any pictures do you please? :)

My male loved them so much I gave him too many, which makes me extra cautious about them now....I'd give no more than 2 a week now.......I reckon you could get away with 3 if she's a good eater like my girl. As Karma says, the moths are loved too (and I assume they have less fat than the grubs). They will eventually turn into moths if you just leave them in whatever they came in anyway.....

No particular temp, I just put them in my closet, so around room temp, and twigs that lay from the bottom to the topish of the jug, so they're at an angle and they can climb up and make coccoons, mine just turns to coccoons in the oats though, and wax paper crumbled into balls, so there's little crinkles all around it, they lay their eggs in it.
