Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon? handled maybe every other day

Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders? I feed on average, lately 6-8 medium/large crickets, 2-4, 1 1/4- 1 1/2 silkworms in a day. an occasional superworm or hornworm when available. I give the crickets greens, apples, carrots, sweet potatoes, green beans...etc.

Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule? I am using all exoterra brands. calcium, every feeding on the crickets, and the calcium d3, and the multivitamin every other week.

Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking? mistking for one minute at 8am, and then every other hour for 15 seconds until 8pm one minute again. this keeps humidity at 45+ throughout the day.

Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites? feces seem normal. daily dark brown/white. never been tested that I know of.

History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you. No prior info available (petsmart purchase)

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions? Cage is a nat geo glass terrarium, whith partial screen side and all screen top. 16x16x24 Yes, I know this is small I am getting the lg dragon strand soon.

Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps? cage floor stays around 75, basking 85ish. night temps are around 72. the only way I have been able to measure these temps is with the therm/hydrometer that I purchased when I first purchased the chameleon

Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity? I think ive covered this question...?

Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind? one zebra plant, one dragon plant and on small scheffelera

Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor? the cage is on a "night stand" of sorts, somewhat close to the ac vent and I have an oscillating fan in the bedroom. I have three kids so the whole house is high traffic at times. top of cage approx. 5 feet from floor.

Location - Where are you geographically located? SW GA U.S.

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about. No noticeable problems and hopefully it stays that way just wanted this to be my first post before I asked any other questions/advice. This was somewhat of an impulse purchase that I realize should have been planned for ahead of time. so now I am doing things somewhat backwards

Welcome to the Forum.

I wish all new chameleon keepers were as thorough as you, there would be a lot less "He's dying!" posts here!

If you can get some pictures up with close-ups of the chameleon it would be helpful.

If He was 5 months old at Pet Smart, he either was raised by the staff, or returned. Either way, pictures will help to see if he has MBD, or other issues. Hopefully not…

Also pictures of the cage would help for suggestions, although it sounds like you probably have done it up right!:D

CHEERS!

Welcome to the Best place to get advice and feedback:)
I am a newbie here myself. So I will tell you that Pets Marts is not a good place to purchase any reptiles, that is where I also purchased my Cham and he ended getting MBD, which I am now working on correcting. Definitely want to get of the glass and go with an all screen enclosure. with plants being in their, they will help maintaining the humidity. This little guys can be expensive especially when someone new doesn't go out and do lots of research. I did some, but not enough. And once I joined this forum, I will never look for another Cham site ever again! These people are great on here, they are very knowledgeable and can steer you in the right direction. Glad that you are here now:)

so other than the cage needing work, how does he look?

that third photo though, very nice!

Been constantly thinking about getting a zebra plant and your pics are making me want it more! maybe next spring i'm pretty full already and ill see how it fills in over the winter

I am no expert, but having a little guy with MBD, you little ones seem pretty healthy! beautiful colors::

Thanks for all of the complements. I am delighted to know that he appears healthy to more experienced owners. I know it can be a guessing game, but does my age assumption seem somewhat accurate? Body length, 5" overall 10ish. And I feel for everyone who has to deal with mbd.

He looks fairly healthy to me with the exception that he might be a little dehydrated. Notice how sunk in his casque is, and his eyes are a little sunk in as well. Chameleons drink a lot of water make sure he is getting plenty to drink. :)

He looks very healthy, especially coming from PetSmart. There must have been someone there with more knowledge of chameleons than usual. It is possible he is slightly dehydrated, but definitely nothing serious. I would recommend having at least one five minute misting session as it can take them a while to drink.

If your cage is the one I'm thinking of, half of the top is glass and half screen. You will want to make sure he has access to the UVB light on the screen side, because the glass side will block all UVB. Glad to hear you are getting a better cage. That is an excellent light and having an all screen top will allow you to get the most out of it :)

It is hard to judge age by size since they grow at different rates and it also depends on how much they eat, but I think 6-8 months is pretty accurate.

Welcome to the forums! Your little guy looks good, but I agree he needs more water. Have you named him yet?

Recommend adding a dripper system (just a clean large water bottle with a tiny hole in the bottom will do, poke it with a pin or something). Leave it in the same place so he knows where to go for water when he needs it and try to make sure it hits as many leaves as possible on the way down.

And yea, increase one of your misting sessions to a bit longer. 5 minutes-ish would be good.

Hopefully that should help with his mild dehydration and stop it getting worse. Good luck with your new buddy, beautiful colours when he fires up :)

thanks all. dehydrated? his urates are consistently white though. however I will come up with a dripper system over the weekend. unfortunately I cant increase the misting by that much, maybe up to two minutes, or I could have I big mess when I get home. (small cage). by the way, leo is his name. I do have more questions that I will be posting in the appropriate places.
