Warning About Vets

I just want to remind you all to be very careful what vets you decide to take you cham too. Today I took my cham to the vet and was there sitting there for 3 hours to find out that whatever they did to her she passed away. It was nothing I did. They told me she was just a little dehydrated and they were going to give her some IV fluids and some vitamins (that they high suggested) so me wanting the best for my wonderful cham wanted those vitamins cause I trusted the vet. Then the vet came back to tell me that they gave her to much and she passed away right there. Yesterday she was perfectly fine she was shedding so she was grumpy and not eating for me and they also tube fed her cause I told them she didnt eat today (because of shedding). I am very sad and disappointed. She was only two years old. Even the vet said she was to young. All I am saying is becareful. I looked over this vet many times and they had alot of experience in exotic animals.
Thank you for everyone who has helped me on this site. And I with the best for you and your beautiful chams and to cherish them everyday of the week.

oh no..... i am so sorry that you had to go through all that and still lost your little friend.... i pray for a peace for you.... i'm so sorry...

I am very sorry for your loss. However, you said she was perfectly fine, I am curious why you took her to the vet?? There have been other members on over the years who have had chameleons die directly after seeing the vet. I think they can get very stressed out too with all the procedures they do to them and that plays a part I am sure. My mom had a parakeet die when it was getting its nails clipped. It was so scared, that it literally just died. I was a little kid and was there when it happened. The bird was perfectly healthy.

I am sorry for your loss. :( My condolences.

I agree that you need to be very careful selecting a vet to take your chameleon to. Some vets like to make money and they want turn any animal away. I am very, very lucky to have two wonder chameleon vets but in the past I used one vet that was closer to my home and she knew nothing about chameleons and prescribed Batril to my cham when he was not ill. Luckily I knew enough to not give him Baytril because it's hard on the kidneys and should be used only if absolutely necessary. Two other times I had extreme emergencies and used a different vet only an hour away and I lost my first girl shortly after the surgery and my second was a male and he kept bleeding and re-prolapse again and again and I then drove him the 4 and a half hours to my reptile specialist and he was able to save him but it wasn't easy.

I took her to the vet because I wanted to just make sure every was okay. Like a "check up" but next time I get a Cham I'm going to be very careful

Oh my gosh I can't believe that. Yes I definitely need to find a way better vet for my next chameleon

You can always refuse services. If you feel procedures are unnecessary, then don't have it done and atleast get another opinion. I personally do not do well check ups. I do have fecals done from time to time to test for parasites, but dragging a perfectly healthy acting and looking chameleon to have it checked out can do more harm than good. They get easily stressed from transporting and especially when they are in the vets being examined. I don't think it is worth it if they are healthy. Just my opinion.

I think you have a great opinion!

My vets recommend check ups every 6 months since something can go wrong with chameleons so fast. They both say a yearly check up, like for dogs and cats, is not often enough for a chameleon since they age so quickly. My guys are all use to being handled and going for rides so they are not stressed at all going to the vets. I've even had some that reach and grab for the vet when he walks in the room. :)
