Vet problems...need positive feedback.

Hello everyone,
Well i have an issue with my CB 5 month old chameleon (my youngest chameleon) never had this issue with MBD on my other chameleons. I read all the post about MDB problems and the best option for me was to take him to a Vet for calcium boost. Well i did do my best on searching for a reptile vet and i took him there... The problem is that the vet that checked him pulled his mouth open which i thought was ok, but when he did that his mouth stayed open and he couldnt close it by himself so the vet put a little of force to hold his mouth closed for about 1 min and it closed but not all the way and its been about 2 1/2 weeks and his mouth does not close, his tongue sticks out a little and sometimes his tongue hangs out which doesnt look too good poor little guy. He has been getting better walking around and stuff and also tries to eat by himself sometimes but he does not get a good target shot. Well all in all i paid about $180 bucks for the checkup, calcium glubionate, carnivore food to take home, fecal check and now i think i ended up with a dislocated or broken jaw for my poor baby. His mouth was perfectly fine before i took him there. I made a complaint about the vet and the service he performed, now he wants to check up on him. What should i do??

I am so sorry for you and the poor little guy :) If you have lost confidence in the vet who saw him then perhaps a different vet would be the best approach. At least with someone else you can explain what has happened and perhaps get his/ her professional and unbiased opinion on wether the first vet has harmed the poor little boy. Good luck, i really hope he is better soon.

Take the little one back to the vet. Make sure you stay with the cham or at least can see him, tell the vet you want it x-rayed. Do not let the vet pry open or close his mouth. Let us know how it goes and get a copy of the x-ray, hopefully on a cd. Then a good vet can take a look. That is just my opinion.

I agree.....

I agree....give the vet that caused the issue the opportunity to correct it. First the x-ray should be done. If the cham had MBD the use of force on the jaw could have broken it. After the vet finds the problem he will hopefully offer to fix it at no charge. If he won't, you will have to start on plan B which is to get another vet to fix the problem and report the first vet to whatever body regulates veterinarians. Do get his X-rays on a CD. Keep us updated.

Thanks for the comments and help....I will defenitely tell him about the x-ray on cd. I just want him to get better. He would have been alot better if the vet didnt break his jaw....:(

Ack! Id give this enthusiastic but inexperienced vet a miss and try to find another. He may have damaged your lizards mouth/dislocated its jaws.
Too easy to apply too much force.
Definately have a recommended vet near you xray it if possible and followup treatment.
Sorry you had a bad vet experience, It can really bea blow to confidence.
Hopefully somebody can recommend a good vet near you, and your lizard can be fixed.
Best Wishes

Um, if your cham had MBD the jawbone may have been soft and weakened...so when the vet pulled it open it caused a problem. I'm not excusing the vet, just suggesting that a soft jaw might have been present before the vet examined him. Also, if the jaw firms up with treatment it might correct itself or not cause further problems. Just don't know.

I would take ur cham to a diffrent vet ask that vet how you should go about making the first vet pick up the bill. A well trained vet likes making vets that think they know what there doing go under. Most vets become vets due to them having a heart for the animals they deal with.

Sorry about the jaw. Thats lame that the vet did that and the bill seems a little high to me. I would find a new vet. Where are you in FL? Theres a handful of good vets with cham experience throughout the state.

Yea i live in Miami.... will definitely call some other vets to see if they have experience with chameleons....damn i should have asked from the first place but my mistake taking him there in the first place. I am going to the visit on monday to see if they pick up the bill and see what else they can help me with or suggest me to do, but im not going to pay for the damage he has done to my poor little guy Abyss. Its just very unfortunate to have his jaw broken when i was trying to help him.... now me and him are suffering from something worse caused by the vet.

if you have cham vet problems then you are lucky to live in florida. florida has one of the most renowned and experienced cham vets in the country, he has a reputation for being the best cham vet ever. people have even shipped their chams cross country to be evaluated by him (ps i am assuming that by sunshine state you mean fl . ?)
