i just bought a 7 month old male veiled cham. he was a light green when i first bought him but now he is only dark green and a brownish gray. today is his 4th day in the house. he is in a home made wooden frame cage with mesh walls (36 inches tall, 24 inches wide). he has a lot of foliage to hide under, a drip mechanism i made myself, and i mist 3 times a day for a long amount of time. humidity is at 40% and daytime temp is 81-83F and at night it drops to about 70 F. He is quite skinny aswell. Any tips on how to buff him up a bit?

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - veiled, was told to be 7 months, brought home 4 days ago, male.
Handling - havnt handled it yet. trying to make it comfortable.
Feeding - i use orange cubes to gut load my crickets, and i feed him once a day. maybe 12 crickets a day and 4 king worms.
Supplements - i use repcal calcium with d3 to dust my crickets
Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? i mist his cage once in the morning before i turn on his basking light(7pm). another misting around lunch (1pm) and another before lights off (10pm)
Fecal Description - brown with white. sometimes tinted (very slightly) yellow.
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - home made screen cage. 24x24 wide 36 tall
Lighting - 1 100 watt heat lamp, a uvb bulb, and a red heating lamp rests on top of the cage. all lights turn on around 8ish am and turn off around 10 pm.
Temperature - at basking spot 84-80F at night 70s to mid 60s.
Humidity - my humidity level is currently at 40%. I mist 3 times a day and have a drip system.
Plants - I have live and fake plants.
Placement - he is in the corner of my room where there is low traffic with the exception of a few peekers.
Location - Bronx NY

i measure the temps using a thermostat that i bought at the expo. I have a 5.0 uvb coil bulb that twists into the same fixture i have the heat lamp bulbs in.

you would want to change out your coil uvb bulb for a linear tube. The coil bulbs have been known to cause eye problems. Are you dusting with d3 every feeding? if so you should only use that twice a month, you will have to get a calcium supplement without vitamin d3. Do you also have a vitamin A supplement?

i was dusting with d3 every feeding but will not slow down to twice a month. i do not have vitamin A supplement, is it available in ordinary petcos? thank you for the feedback!

yeah they are available at alot of pet stores. I use reptivite from zoomed

I would not recommend Vit A at this point it is very easy to over do it and that is another health issue all together. I think your cham looks good and I would bet that he is dark trying to obtain more heat. I would up his basking temp and give him different levels of basking spots so he can choose how hot he needs to be. If it were me, I would give him plain calcium every other day just to make sure he's getting enough since you're not sure how the previous owner supplemented him.

I would also get rid of the red heating lamp and use a ceramic heat bulb. The red light could cause eye issues during the day and there should be no light at all at night. Think about it......red lights are not found in the wild.

Your gutload needs alot of work. Any feeders you have except silkworms and hornworms should be fed fresh fruits and veg like collard, turnip greens, squashes, carrots, oranges, etc. DO NOT USE SPINACH OR BROCCIL IT BINDS THE CALCIUM.

Veiled Chams like fresh fruits and veg too, so make sure you offer those to him as well.

Let us know how he's doing!

how do i post my own questions?

Go to a forum choose the category your question falls under then look on the top left hand side you should see a tab that says new topic or something to the like click on it , you put a heading mostly the subject matter if your topic then in the bottom you go into more detail of your problem or topic. Now lets help the op and not hijack it :p

are you asking a general question or to someone specifically? I use Shefflera, hibiscus and ficus in my enclosures and free range.

Oh lol, he said he had live plants so I was just curious as to what kind. I'm wanting to a few live ones to my set up I'm just not sure what is available during the winter and what would be the safest to go with.

i dont know the name of it but i use the 3rd plant shown on the bottom. maybe one of you can tell me what it is. plus for some weird reason my cham started scratching at his side head, and seems to scratch at the vines almost like a dog kicking dirt over his poop. help.
