UVB bulb?

I have a coiled bulb and I have read that they are discouraged. Why is this? Should I go out and get a long 18'?

There have been problems in the past with coiled UVB bulbs causing severe eye problems. Your light is probably safe, but your safest bet is to get a linear bulb.

The coils can cause severe eye issues including blindness. The safest and most recommended UVB bulb is the ReptiSun 5.0 linear tube.
