UVB bulb?

I'm gonna be ordering a new baby veiled within the next couple days so im researching (again!) and seem to be finding alot of people here on the forum talking bout UVB bulbs possibly being harmful to baby veileds if you dont get the right one. i currently have a zoo med reptisun 10.0 UVB mini compact flurescent 13w AC120v / 60Hz. it has 2 coils. any thoughts on if i should get a different one before i get my new baby would be sooooo appreciated, i dont want to use one thats gonna harm him!!!!
 
I think 10.0 is too much for him. Try lowering it to 5.0.
Other than that, I think everything else sounds great. I'm going to link you to a care sheet and I suggest you go through it because once you read it, you will know everything there is to know about veiled chameleons (baby-adults).

No worries and no problem. What I did to get prepared was for my first chameleon was I printed both care sheets. I read both of them and high lighted the very important facts. I made sure I read it well so I know things. Whatever I was unsure about, I would ask a buddy on the forums to explain it to me. When I was preparing my cage, I kept putting pictures up of how it looked and I took peoples advice about doing this and doing that. Somethings that I didn't know, I would post a thread and some people would link me to a thread about my specific topic and others would give me their personal thought.

Ahh... A tank really isn't a good place to put your chameleon. You want a screen cage so that way he could get air. A tank you'll have all four sides covered with glass and the top with screen which isn't that good for your chameleon because you'll have your dripper there probably if you own one along with your lights. Go with a screen cage. I started off with 18x18x24'. Read through the care sheet. I'll tell you the cage you need for a baby.
 
ive gotten alot of mixed opinions about the tank. some people say that a tank with 3 glass sides and 2 screen sides works fine for the first several months until they grow some and then getting a large all screen cage. thats what ive planned on doing so far, however im also looking into getting a large all screen cage and perhaps dividing it with a sheet halfway so that it wont be too overwelming for the baby until he gets bigger.
 
A glass terrarium with screen strips or more than just the top made of screen is a suitable cage for chameleons. It's true that an aquarium is not very great, but terrariums are fine and half the forum uses them with no problems. You will just have to be more careful about not leaving water standing at the bottom of the cage for too long, but nothing some paper towels or the like can't take care of.

The 10.0 isn't necessarily the problem, though. I personally prefer the long linear fluorescent UVB bulbs because they stretch out the light across the entire cage as opposed to just in one spot, but many people also use the coil lights with success in smaller enclosures.

okay thank you Olimpia! im planning on keeping him in the smaller terrarium for several months and after he grows some moving him into a large mesh cage so that he wont be in a huge cage when hes a tiny baby! as for the UVB bulb, im still wondering about it because i've read alot of different opinions on it. i dont know if i should get the 5.0 and keep the 10.0 for when he's larger or not. i dont want to chance it overloading him at all
 
I personally use the (linear) 10.0 bulbs now for everyone, including my two baby panther girls. I've seen all the studies on UVB output through screen for all the big brands plus I've checked my own bulbs with a Solarmeter and I haven't seen anything yet that makes me think that the levels I'm seeing are harmful in any way.

It's up to you if the 5.0 makes you more comfortable, but you can use the 10.0 later with confidence.
 
ok ill look into the linear bulbs for sure, they didnt have any at the store where i got my first baby so ill look online and see what i can find!!
on a side note, im gonna be ordering my new baby veiled next week, im sooooo excited!!!!!
 
As said many people are now realising there is nothing wrong with using a 10.0 uv tube for their chameleons. it will not burn the chameleon or be too strong, tbh t8 bulbs dont give out heaps of uv! I persoanlly have used 10.0 bulbs on tanks from 18inches high to 4 feet high adult cages with great success.
 
what i have currently is a 10.0 with two coils and the terrarium hes gonna be in for the first couple months is 12x12x12. im gonna be moving him into a large 48x24x24 cage when he's larger but im wondering if the coils are too strong for the same terrarium in the meantime
